It was an eye-opener yesterday to see that a marsh in central Iowa that normally can be canoed and fished is now bone dry. You could walk through it without getting your shoes muddy. A month ago, that area still held water.
It adjoins some prime cropland, which one assumes has little or no subsoil moisture, given the condition of the undrained wetlands next door. Tile lines and drainage ditches along the road were dry as dust.
Hard to imagine what it will take to recharge soil moisture here in Iowa. Last week's Drought Monitor gives little cause for hope in the short-term: U.S. Seasonal Drought Outlook.
What are things like on your farm?
Thanks....
John
