Here's a quote from a U/Ill publication, short 1 page.
"apital purchases have been at high levels for a number of years. The last three years (2008, 2009, and 2010) have seen capital purchases at levels not experienced previously – an average of around $90,000 per farm here in Illinois. The two years previous to those three, (2006 and 2007) had average levels of capital purchases that were records as well."
I have to say that I've spent a relatively large amount on capitol purchases, but each of them had a specific reason and, perhaps interestingly, I plan to quite doing my own farm work in 2-4 years. Mine went for a planter, combine, wagons and tile. I am very confident I'll get my money back out of each of them.
