Re: Saturday mail

Fed Ex is competitive because it is required to carry anything anyone sticks in an envelope anywhere in the country for less than fifty cents.  A typical mailer I receive via FedEx has $15 or more in fees attached to it.  They do not send a carrier by my box every day, on the off chance that I may mail something out.

The other shippers charge whatever it costs to deliver, even if that means adding fuel surcharges.  As one example, amazon will deliver in 3-7 business days free by USPS for a $25 minimum purchase.  I pay $80 a year for FedEx and UPS to make 2- day deliveries, with no minimum required.

This saves me numerous trips to the city, looking for nonperishable food and laundry items, dietary supplements, housewares, shoes, farm and office supplies, etc., that are unavailable locally.  I come out like a fat rat on fuel saved alone, not to mention time saved.

BTW, people complain about " junk" mail, but that direct advertising stuff is what has carried USPS for a long time now, so really subsidizes every letter in a way.
