FWIW, corn was planted last Friday and Saturday near Keswick, Iowa located in SE Iowa, between Iowa City and Ottumwa.

BTO reportedly had goal of planting 400 acres.....don't know how much he got done.  I got my info from the sprayer operator who sprayed the first field Friday afternoon.

Local discussion ranging from "He's nuts" to "Obviously he has nothing better to do"  to "You know, he might be ok with this".

Will know more in a few weeks.

For my part, got 75% of anhydrous put on over the weekend in some of the best conditions I have ever worked in......

With that type of a four inch soil temp, that corn will be out of the ground in a hurry! What it does after that, well.....

I'm interested in how many farmners are still waiting for seed ordered earlier to arrive. I gess the issue is whether the S American effort to increase popular or premium seed will be in time for early seeding?

For what it's worth...I feel that rash planting decisions like you describe...are mostly to blame on the federally subsidized insurance available today. We'd all like to plant early, but won't do it because of the chance of being frozen out. But if you've gotten someone else to pay for part of your insurance bill...and find it necessary to farm 30,000 acres to make a living, then planting when it's unnecessarily risky is easy.

Not only did I not get my seed yet, I didn't even get the e-mail that it was delivered to my dealer's warehouse yet!

Pupdaddy - since he has planted ahead of the allowed insurance date he will not have coverage for replant if he gets frozen out.

 I have heard form a couple different people that some companies replant policy do not go into effect until the crop ins. early plant date. Don't know for sure, but if I was going to plant this early I would check to find out.  Patrick

    How risky is planting corn this early,frost wise?What temp will harm it,and for how lone mite the risk be?

Corn planted this time of year in IOWA has two chances of making it . . SLIM & NONE

Chances it will suffer a 20 to 35% stand reduction with this cool wet spell we have just entered. Then it has to run the gauntlet of potential repeated freezing nights (and maybe a few cold days as well) Wonder what 6 inches of wet cold snow will do to it after it is kind of up?

OH yea...back to that slim and none thingy again. I call it a DSI action on their part. They should have to pay retail for replacement seed AFTER everyone else has their pick.
