Mizzou you are right about this thing coming to a head. Eventually Iran will do something dumb enough like shut down shipping routes for goods and oil and we will be back at it again... Back to two wars! The war in Afghanistan I feel is a war we fight to prove not only to terrorist organizations but to the world that attacking a country's civilians for no apparent reason is unacceptable...... Mizzou as you know war is a horrible thing... Until one lives it you can never fully grasp it. As for me I don't believe this country really deserves its heroes. My generation has fought well over the past 10 years without a draft. Most could forget we are even at war. When was the last time you seen a weekly list of casualties? The media seemed to beg for war but now that we are in a bloody, boring stalemate the media could care less.... Its on to the next war for them. Im in favor of the draft for every military action and then we will see just how many people are in favor of a "quick" strike. Sadly I agree with some of what you are saying but the consequences of these things are burned into my memory.

As far as markets go it is a wild card.
I suppose that the $150 oil that would follow a strike on Iran might be positive to grain prices in the short term given that we've unwisely joined grain to oil at the hip. Probably not in the longer term as that would be quite a shock to a teetering world economy.
Given that there is historical precedent via the Israeli attack on the U.S.S. Liberty in 1967 I think we have to be on guard for the possibility of a false flag attack on some U.S. assets as a means to draw the U.S. into conflict with Iran.

As General Wesley Clark has testified, there were plans in place before 9/11 to affect regime change in 7 ME countries. All have occurred or are in process except for Iran.
The Israelis are the masters of game theory and psy-ops. I'm still hoping that they are basically playing the old anti-Soviet strategy by keeping the heat on Iran, keeping them overspending on defense and then starving their revenue stream off.
I'm assuming that would require the cooperation of the gulf arabs and you'd think they go along as they have no love of the shiites.
I could be wrong in believing that it can be done but it has no downside other than perhaps for people who are long oil or commodity indexes. As far as the big boys, I'd assume that Goldman and Morgan Stanley (the big dog in paper oil) would be part of the game so they certainly wouldn't be complaining as long as there's plenty in it for them.
Final and greatest point- Iran probably wouldn't be finished by election time but $50 oil would probably do more for Obama's re-election than anything else that could be done.

invading iraq was dumb, invading afganistan was dumber(many empires died there) an attack on iran would be the ultimate in stupidity. i think osama won here(although dead). he said he would bleed us dry. any body notice the annual deficits? just another democracy spending its way into oblivion. we are no different.
