Upgrading Shop Lighting

Dave Mowitz wrote a provocative and useful article on updating and upgrading your shop lighting.  I'm in the process of doing that research right now.  My shop has old sodium mercury lights that are getting dimmer and in some cases burned out.  I badly need modern lighting.

I think I'll jump straight to LED, but I'm going to run the numbers first.  At my age, I don't want to convert to flourescent and then in 10 years switch to LED.  Better one migration.  But, I'll run the numbers.  I also don't want to have to change bulbs 16 in the air very often.

If you use the calculators you find online, you'll notice that one factor to be considered is how high the light is from the work.  There are lights designed for installation 20 and more feet above the word surface.
