I am on Verizon, and am referring to the hotspot usage through the DROID RAZR..not the data plan for the phone itself.  I use the DROID for my iPad's Internet connection when I am away from home. 

Our guests could see my network on their laptops, under available connections, and when I gave them the code, could log in through me.  It worked fine, and kept a lot of them happily connected to Facebook and such on the trip.
