Here's a little nugget I ran onto this morning:

"Last month, the Senate Budget Committee reported that in fiscal year 2011, between food stamps, housing support, child care, Medicaid and other benefits, the average US household below the poverty line received $168 a day in government support. The problem is the median household income in America is just over $50,000, or in other words about $137.13 a day. This basically means being on welfare now pays more than most "average" families are "earning" by working. It’s no wonder that welfare is now the biggest part of the budget, more than Social Security or defense."

Maybe we can tax the wealthy enough to get that up to $200 per day. Incredible statistic, but very believable. I guess this may be a reason that crime is down, too. If welfare pays that much, why would anyone resort to crime and take the risks?

I'd be interested in the source for that (link?), even while I don't necessarily doubt it.  I do wonder what all is included.  Curious as to whethr or not paid in entitlements, such as Social Security, are included?   

But, yeah, and in light of the lead post that your are responding to, I'd expect that most appreciative of what is shown in your post are the food and grocery industries (production ag among them), energy refiners, housing rent takers, the telecommunication industry, etc. etc.

I had an old, long deceased, raving New Deal liberal, depression surviving, WW2 Vet  (probably a communist sympathizer for all I know, althoug there were no local chapters of the CPSUSA) neighbor who said over and over again that if "the welfare" was just for the poor and indigent there wouldn't be any.  That the "good people" would have no problem with letting them starve or, to paraphrase him using Mitt Romeny's language, "self deport" were it not for the fact that the recipients don't (can't) save or hoard or develop anything sustainable as a result of the fact that they are nearly instant and perpetual consumers who spend every last dime to survive.

Now i suppose some here will have some anecdotes to share  about those you know on "the welfare" drinking it all up and buying cigarettes wtih food stamps and such. At least that is what generally has happened here.

Well, first thing this report is that it doesn't pass the "non-biased" test as only the Republican members of that committee did the report.  The second thing is that the people were NOT "paid" that money.  That is the supposedly COST of doing the programs in addition to the actual cash and stamps.  I'm sure it is very costly but I don't think I can accept it at face value due to who compiled the data.

One thing that is included is the Pell grant.  SS and Medicare are not includedsince everyone pays into those.

So the 1% support Obama, who does this surprise. They also want him to increase the debt ceiling by any means necessary and to continue to spend some one else's money. As I am sure he will. He isn't going to allow the repubs to hold a gun to the head of the American people, that would just be tooooo cruel after he already shot their legs out from under them.

I keep hearing how the biggest problem facing the poor in this country, is obesity, and the various diseases that occur when you are overweight, and don't get enough excercise.

Let's see....too much food, and not enough activity.....

Do I have to go any farther, or is my point being made.

Now, before I again get charged with wanting anyone getting public assistance, to first have to look like Auschwitz survivors, I am all for helping the needy.   However, there iS such a thing, as too much help.

My sister in law, calls it the 'stray cat' syndrome.

If you have a stray cat show up at your house, and you feed it enough to get by, provided it still has to gou out and catch a mouse or two, you will likely have one cat that shows up from time to time.

However, if you have a stray cat show up at your house, and you feed it all it can eat, build it a little home, and make sure that not only are its basic needs met, but that it never wants for anything ever again, in a short matter of time, you will have 10 or 20 cats in your front yard.
