$1500 bypass surgery

Indian philanthropist and cardiac surgeon, Devi Prasad Shetty is obsessed with making heart surgery affordable for millions of Indians. As Bloomberg notes, Shetty is not a public health official motivated by charity. He’s a heart surgeon turned businessman who has started a chain of 21 medical centers around India. By trimming costs, he has cut the price of artery-clearing coronary bypass surgery to 95,000 rupees ($1,583), half of what it was 20 years ago, and wants to get the price down to $800 within a decade. The same procedure costs $106,385 at Ohio’s Cleveland Clinic. Of course, this will come as no surprise after we showed the incredible spread of the price of an appendectomy“It shows that costs can be substantially contained,”notes the World Heart Federation, "it’s possible to deliver very high quality cardiac care at a relatively low cost." But, for Americans of course, when you have government footing the cost (and deficit spending), who cares?

Re: $1500 bypass surgery

Such lunacy. There is nothing to prevent a cardiac surgeon from charging $1000 for a by pass surgery. But like everything in a capitalist societyMarkets determine price. Not govern, ment but willing sellers and willing buyers.

The same reason you see cash rents from $200 per acre to $500 p[er acre.

But then you awlays did like to blame the excesses of capitalism onto socialism

It's not Obama care the cause high insurance rates. It insurance companies that raised insurance rates long befor obamacare came on the scene. You see I remember $1600 insurance premiums long before obama was elected. Raising premiums is not a newfound strategy.

Re: $1500 bypass surgery

The system established by insurance corps. and government control of health care effectively prevents health care providers from adjusting their fees as they may wish.  The system the insurance and government has establish is to pay no more than the HC providers charges other people.  So if they charge the poor a low price that's all the insurers will pay for any work the HC providers.

Check it out with your hospital and doctors, they will give better details than I can.   Of course the incomes of doctors has risen greatly since.

Re: $1500 bypass surgery

Which ism, capitalism, fascism, or socialism makes the Mexican dentist so much cheaper?  Why doesn't that dentist come across the border and setup shop if he can charge so much more here?  Why are the exact same drugs so much cheaper in foreign country's than here and why can't ambitious wholesalers buy the drugs in mexico and resale them here?

Re: $1500 bypass surgery

Well, it certainly isn't socialism that makes those things cost less. How much does the Drs. surgical nurses earn? What kind of hospital does he operate in? How much do the orderlies and floor nurses make? What is the average yearly income in India? Most likely the Mexican dentist doesn't go to America because he doesn't want to live outside of his country. Besides, just like Wal Mart found out if you charge less, you get more business. Of course, normally the Mexican dentists and Drs and pharmacists away from the border most likely charge even less because they don't get any Americans and Canadians as customers. The cost of living is much less in Mexico therefore expenses are less.

Re: $1500 bypass surgery

The govt doesn't control all health care in this country. AND the one area, Medicare, that the govt does control, Drs agree to accept much less that the standard rate thus lowering the cost of care. The govt does not stop Drs, labs, hospitals, clinics, etc from LOWERING prices.

Re: $1500 bypass surgery

It's the overhead of bureaucracy and the wonders of government.   It takes a how many million employees to handle the paperwork of the hospitals and doctors/  Add in the millions of paper fillers and filers for the insurance game.

The statests will glory in how much employment the government created.

I like to wonder what could be achieve if all that manpower was applied to producing useful tangible goods.

Re: $1500 bypass surgery

US trial lawyers run up the costs of medical insurance.    So that Mexican dentist is better off in Mexico,  not having to pay the huge insurance premiums to cover him from ambulance chasing attorney lawsuits.

Drugs in the US are sold with recovering the research and development costs from us while foreigners don't pay those costs.   Foreign nations often refuse to honor the patents on drugs,  forcing drug companies to sell them at lower prices in their nations or face some generic version and get nothing.   So the foreign prescription drug users are riding on our backs,  what's new there?

Heaven forbid if socialised medicine ever gets loose and people get it for free but in the meantime just enjoy the knowledge that your hard earned is paying for your doctors big house and boat. Suckers.
