Re: 173 Extremists
The only irony I see would lie in the fact that what little legislation that has been passed by Democrats over the past decade and a half or so has been in regard to social and cultural matters. And danged slowly and begrudgingly, until popular sentiment was too strong to avoid passage. Sprinkled in with a good number of "Well, we tried" spectacular failures, after half-hearted mostly for show efforts.
Opposition to those bills and laws always lies in a minority, even , of the GOP. But it's a noisy bunch, and well supported and projected in the rightist media, for sure. I suppose that maybe the two certainly not very liberal Democratic Presidents of the era have made a handful of executive appointments and directives to placate the "left". whatever that actually is today, but on the stuff that affects damned to near everybody every day, they've both pretty much been to the right of what posterity would see as classicly conservative.
As for matters of the economy...... banking, subsidization of capital requiring businesses, trade, insurance, taxation etc. the results have been almost exclusivley to the right...how did nox put it?...to the right of the post WW2 center. They've more been about drasticly rearranging, dropping support for or dismantling things that served us well for numerous decades. Alot of stuff gone missing, actually, that I'm thinking the on average poorly informed public actually might think is still in there.

Re: 173 Extremists
Which, then of course, would sanctify the disingenious crap being spewed out to gullible and historically illiterate reactionary right wing believers over the past couple of days about the "liberal" young Mr. Loughner having read both Mein Kampf AND The Communist Manifesto. Which just goes to prove......
Your being a good soldier. Picking up on signals well. The socialism/facism and communist/Nazi thing is becoming a huge factor in the right spin on this horrible tragedy.
And now to find that all of those anarchists, socialists and other adventerous freedom fighters from all over the world could have just stayed home 75 years ago and let Franco have Spain without all of that unecessary bloodshed and destruction. If somebody from the modern right would have been around to have told them that "Hey, relax, we're really all the same.".

Re: 173 Extremists
"It should be pretty obvious that the socialist in this country are more than willing to make a few stops in fascism to get to a completely socialistic system."
You are on track but still way off. If you ever judged livestock competitively you'd get about a 32 out of 50 on this class.
You''ve got the concept right but the basic math wrong. Doesn't work that way. Can't. Impossible because once you arrive at facism you go nowhere until usurped. But the European facsist states that were established in Portugal, Spain, Germany and Italy garnered public support through promises of socialism, on thier way to fascism.. It's fascinating to read up on, actually.
But those who would desire socialism could never start with an appeal to fascism, as that is a dead ender.
There was a large amount of admiration in the business community here in the U.S and in Great Britian (and an immense level of financial and technical support) for HItler, Mussolini, Franco etc. And the Hoover administration touted all sorts of socialist programs no doubt to get the puiblic behind where our plutocracy wanted to take us. But without the naturally occuring nationalism in the US that would naturally have been built around a generally common ethnicity in each of those European countires we stopped at the socialism...never got close to the facsism until AFTER the war with the growth of the military industrial complex which came to full maturity in the 1980 Presidential election.
But then, I suppose, if it had been done your way, we'd have never gone to war...or might have been on the other side.

Re: 173 Extremists
I actually don't disagree with you, at least totally.
But it is my current belief that the Republicans and their handlers are by far the greater danger.

Re: 173 Extremists
Why should she relinquish her position to some one to the right? Did the republican'ts do that when Nancy took over the speakership.?
You may have won the congressional majority but you did not win control of the democratic party. Geez what makes you think you should call the shots in the democratic party?
Democrats retained the senate but I don't see repubs replacing Mitch McConnell and installing someone left of center. You really have interesting logic, Craig or is that another one of your gems you picked up from who knows where?

Re: 173 Extremists
Gabby Giffords, a blue dog democrat that was probably more republican than leftist, was shot after voting against Nancy Pepsicoli.....a lesson perhaps to other right leaning leftists.
