Re: 18 years ago, society really did change.
And in the blitz there were almost 50,000 British civilians killed and well over 100,000 injured just going about their lives in their homes and at work.
That was war and the attacks in 2001 were just terrorist attacks, no comparison.

Re: 18 years ago, society really did change.
Hey Packard, you are correct that most of us didn`t sacrifice because of 9/11, we were told to "donate blood and go shopping" to which most of us gladly obeyed. The cost of the war was put on credit cards and we didn`t even feel the sting of the complete cost. Politically, something had to be done and anything less than success would hurt the future electability of those in office at the time.
Bush was in a spot where if he didn`t respond quickly and effectively, a future attack wouldn`t be forgiven by the public. the Democrats even understood and stuffed their pacifist base into the broom closet with a taped mouth... ask a Dixie Chick. Now that "the coast is clear", the Dixie Chicks are cool once again. A war and all that goes with it can be forgiven, but another 9/11 wouldn`t have been, now maybe that`s good politics. But it isn`t perhaps the best course of action for the country. Just my opinion is the Iraq war should`ve been financed with a $1 tax on fuel, when people got tired of paying it, voila! they`d "bring the boys back home" ...hey this revenge thing was fun, but now it`s getting awfully expensive.
9/11, seems to be a turning point morally for the US. "Good girls" started getting tattoos, open gay relationships weren`t seen as Uff-dah, marijuana was seen as "harmless" and should be legalized....Grandpa died, let`s party! I don`t know if enough spoiled people just happened to come of age in the early 2000`s and or too many of the old guard moral compasses passed away, but it did so happen that socialism was and is not seen as a bad thing anymore by a sizable chunk of the electorate.
The 40-something mother that hasn`t yet gotten a tattoo and drinks too much, is chastised by her kids instead of that bad behavior encouraged by them. I guess there has to be an "adult" in the situation and if the actual adult is incapable, then the young teen will have to grow up early. Too many 30 yr old 40 yr old 50 yr old persons still believe themselves to be 16 again and want the "fun" of making teenage poor judgments.

Re: 18 years ago, society really did change.
BA, lots of good points there. The $1/gallon fuel tax would have put the cost where it belonged for the US being in the Middle East. Severing ties with Saudi Arabia instead of invading Iraq and Afghanistan would have been the right course, too, knowing where the terrorists actually originated, and who financed them. The Bush's are/were up to their necks in dirty Prince Bandor money and are just as traitorous as Mrs. Clinton, Biden, and Obama. The clowns can still try to throw Russia Russia Russia feces up against the wall, and nothing sticks on Trump, but good monkeys never seem to give up.
As far as American women and their tattoos, Lesbian fetishes, desire to escape responsibilities, etc......the evidence is clearly there. Hollywood is a barometer of what is out there, but it isn't really the cause.....it just illustrates it. I just hope none of my descendents ever brings home a Madonna type, or turns into one.

And the Brits didn't respond because they didn't have the ability to respond. You never want to allow yourself to be in that situation.

Re:roughly 51 years ago, society really did change.
Respectfully I disagree with the date.
I believe that the US changed because of Vietnam. The division, the drugs and the sexual experimentation or confusion came about as east met west and morality became fluid. The inconsistency of government in dealing with the enemy was felt by soldiers and the general population. It was then that America's news media turned against the country and embraced those on the left.

Society changed when the media realized they could get rid of a sitting president.

Actually the Brits gave the Germans such a bad time in daylight raids it forced the Germans to resort to night time bombing and that the Brits did not have adequate resources to counter for a time. They did not have planes that could fly and find the Germans in the dark and few searchlights or anti aircraft guns at that time.

As I said, the Brits didn't have the ability to respond. If they did the german planes would have been destroyed in Germany.
