A republican explains and admits the obvious

Well, will the right wingers accept the findings of one of their own, or will they continue to deny the blatantly obvious facts that most people already know??????

Where Did Our Debt Come From?

Chuck Spinney, who spent his career as a budget analyst in the Pentagon -- that's him, on the cover of Time for his defense-reform work in the Reagan era -- has an idea about the answer. The green in the chart below shows periods when America's overall federal debt burden shrank; red, when it grew. Spinney, by the way, is no one's idea of a standard liberal. He's more a deficit hawk than anything else, meaning both that he's hard-line against excess spending and that he's pro-defense but cheap. He explains the chart he has prepared:

Obama inherited a federal deficit that was spinning out of control (mostly because of decreased tax take and increased expenditures for automatic stabilizers, e.g. unemployment insurance), and pressure is growing to cut Social Security (perhaps the most efficiently run program in government) while placing Defense (one of the most inefficiently run programs) off limits. These political pressures are not new and in fact have been building up for years. So, as a first cut into a complex issue, perhaps it is time for the angry masses to ask which political party put them into the fiscal straight jacket that is setting them up for this horrible choice?

Tom...maybe you should keep putting that up, or at least keep moving it to the top until you are sure there has been enough time for all of these various breeds of "conservatives" to have read and comprehended it...which of course would be forever...but, thank you for digging it up for us...for sure.

If there were to be any comprehensive discussion of it here we'd have to have Sam show up with the Austrian or the Randian response, but I haven't seen him for a few days. Might be busy stocking his survival shelter.

  LOL, I'll oblige.

Nah, he's already sold that off during the recent price peak, and it's no longer in vogue to have gold now. It's buyin' lead and fishing related stuff for memorabilia, because Obama is going to outlaw both of them, don't ya know.

Re: A republican explains and admits the obvious

The people elected the dems in 06 because they ran on a platform of fiscal responsibility. They gave them 4 years. They have done nothing to bring fiscal responsibility to DC. They have gone in the other direction. The people sent them packing. The voter say they want the government to control spending.

Re: Dear Spinmeister.....,

I can't wait to see this chart after it has been updated with the data from Der Führer's administration.....

I doubt that the format will be able to show all of the zeros without shrinking the font size.

Re: I'm guess that I'm happy it wasn't another stupid cartoon

Yet you couldn't dispute the facts about the graph, even with your stupid photoshopped image and pointless remark, that of course includes the usual Hitler BS.

I thought that you maybe you celebrated the election too much, or that the Iowa teapublicans cut off your internet funding.

The biggest reduction in the debt burden was after the Republicans took over congress in 95. The dems ran on fiscal responsibility in 06 and have failed. Now we can see if they want to help reduce federal spending or if given the chance in 12 the Obama, Pelosi, and Reid will run for out socialism.

Why then could you reduce deficits during the Bush years Perhaps those repub congressmen forgot how they did it during the Clinton years?

You are 100% dead on right Mr Kraft, that's why they were rejected in 06. They forgot how to be conservative. The dems promised less spending. They have not delivered and have no intention to do so in the future. If they were they would not have made Nancy Pelosi speaker. They want more not less government.
