Australia Day

This day is celebrated as Australia Day. It was the day Oz was claimed by the British as being their own and virtually ignoring the fact aborigines lived here for 40000years.  Aborigines celebrate it as the day their country was taken from them and I suppose they have a right to celebrate that if they wish.

We have a public holiday for all who wish and fill the day in throwing thongs, boiling billies, eating prawns, barbecuing kangaroos and wombats, getting drunk then rolling home on sundown  to conveniently fall into bed.  Some people are to snobberish to move outside in the sun because they might mix with the commoners so stay inside sipping chardonnay and eating crackers.  Good luck to them.   Do you have such a day?

Re: Australia Day

Do you have fireworks too?

Understand some areas are too dry to safely set off fireworks at this time of year.

Canada has a big celebration on July 1st which is the date that we became a country made up of 4 provinces only on July 1st 1867.

Lots of outside parties and fireworks across the land.

Many BBQ's get a work out that day and it is warm wether too.

Guess the guys putting this country together thought of that when they picked July 1st.

Re: Australia Day

snip-

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard clung to her bodyguard as she was dragged to safety through a crowd of angry protesters in Canberra today.

Riot police formed a shield around the prime minister as they helped her force a path through the protesters who surrounded a restaurant where she was attending an awards ceremony to mark Australia Day.

Miss Gillard stumbled after losing a shoe in the scuffle, but was caught by her personal security guard and managed to get into a waiting car.

The protests appear to have been aimed primarily at opposition leader Tony Abbott, who was also in the building when some 200 demonstrators began banging on its windows, shouting 'shame' and 'racist'.

Mr Abbott had angered activists earlier in the day by saying it was time the nearby Aboriginal Tent Embassy 'moved on'.

The embassy, a ramshackle collection of tents and shelters on the lawn of Parliament House, is at the centre of the campaign for Aboriginal sovereignty and land rights.

Sounds like a cross between the Superbowl, and a big NASCAR race.  If there is Fireworks, throw in a little 4th of July.

Re: Australia Day

It's also India's Republic Day, don't suppose they will have any Dunny races though-->http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEsnb3kUDAw

Re: Australia Day

Cripes those Colonies, coming and going like that, must have kept the Britsh imperialists hopping.

All the Maggie hoopla, with the Meryl Streep movie and her b'day anniversary and all sure does make one pine for a glorious event like Her Magesty's glorious triumph over the wayward leaning Falkands.

Re: Australia Day

So when do you think Australia will elect an Aborigine to the highest office in the country?  Or are they too shiftless and lazy for you white people down there to consider voting for them?  You like to think us conservatives in America don't like the "blackfella" because he's black which for most of us is complete bulls**t.  We don't like him because of his policies.   I could care less what color he is.  At least this country elected a minority to the highest office in the country.  Can't say that for Australia I don't think but I don't study Australian politics the way you study ours.  Anyway enjoy your holiday and go take something from an Aborigine in celebration.

Re: Australia Day

You sound a bitter twisted little nerk if ever I heard one.  Read my post on the emblazenment of flags in your country and tell me if that phenomenon is not international.  There has never been a blackfella stand for high office but, unbeknown to you quite obviously, they hold some key positions in government related positions.

Your hatred for O is partly politic but never deny the racist overtones expecially when you said they are a minority.  It might do your brain some good to exercise it by studying Oz politics more and get away from the mantra of continual freedom and liberty you scream about.  You think you guys invented it and try to export it all over the world.  We have greater freedom, if you like, but don't wear it on our sleeves like you mob.  Anyway, it is said you do not have the sense of humour your colleagues have and saw the funny side.  I love your comments though because your hatred always comes from the heart.

Re: Australia Day

My "hatred" is only your perception and couldn't be further from the truth.  You continually cry racism in this country when it comes to people who don't like Obama but ignore the problem in your own country.  Don't preach to me from a glass house you hypocrit.  I guess I do have a hint of racism in me.....I don't like white people who tell me the only reason I don't like Obama is because he's black.  You didn't answer the question in my post which isn't unusual for you when you sit on your high horse.

NO - I maintain what I said, you are a bit twisted and bitter.   I find it exceptionally ignorant to suggest racism is not rife in the US. That is probably because you want it to be.

Could you tell me how our aboriginal relations could be improved, knowing you have all the knowledge to rectify such. I eagerly await you reply so be careful what you accuse us of and wear a crash helmet when you read it.  Have a nice day.
