 About 750,000 acres of some of the best farmland close to cities are permanently converted to non-agricultural use every year.  If Gates keeps it as farmland that's better than the alternative.

I wonder if it his personally, or his foundation?

Ted Turner used to say to people who were mad at him for buying up ranch lands that they could get over it because it wasn't like he was going to own it forever.

I gather Gates has no intention of leaving very much of it to his kids, although the foundation may go on more or less in perpetuity.

Lol. Yes, probably closer to the Clinton Foundation than the Trump one. Quite legitimate.

Leaving aside that it's Bill Gates, a known child-brain eating sex trafficker who is putting mark-o-the-beast brain chips in us via the vaccine, I guess this is what I think.

I strongly believe in very heavy estate taxation on huge fortunes. I'd leave the charitable option on the table as long as family foundations are closely regulated.

As far as limits on investors owning farmland, what do you suggest? I gather many states tax farmland very steeply, with a homestead deduction rate for actual farmers. Although in a 0 bound world I'm not sure that rate of return matters to people with $Bs who just want to diversify.

I know the Lib crowd will say "Gates` farmland is only .000000000000000000000001% of ownership in the US...so take a chill pill!!!!".   However, this is a trend that we should keep an eye on (what we in the minority can do about it, don`t know).   

But these days there seems to be a glut of evil billionaires, $1 billion can buy 100,000 prime farm acres. If there is a farm squeeze coming and land has to be sold, there may not be a continuation of lack of land on the market.  In the past it`s been a concern of the Soviets or Chinese troops attacking the US, but whoda thunk in the future (presently) there would be a plethora of wealthy individuals with the mentality of socialism that have the means of attending a land auction and simply write out a check for what they need without firing a shell in anger.
