Bernie was trying to save you

http://www.counterpunch.org/2016/04/28/inequality-will-increase-until-theres-a-revolution/

But as Galbreath famously said, people of privilege will risk their own destruction before voluntarily surrendering any of it.

In present company I'm guessing there aren't even many people of high privilege, just folks who are bad at math.

Despite the hysterical warnings, we aren't going to vote ourselves into being Venezuela as long as our institutions remain intact. The risk is fairly high if the present upward redistribution of wealth continues on an extrapolated path for another 20-30 years.

I'd say that is a near certainty even given that the .1% has installed a surveillance and permanent warfare state to protect them and the process, under the guise of a war on terrorism.

If that day comes I don't know if I'll be around and not sure which side of the divide my descendants will fall. But one of the certainties of such an event is that it won't stop at the .1%ers but will include the lower castes at the higher end of the scale who acted as gatekeepers, even as they had no real stake in the game.

And yes, once we go through that process then Venezuela becomes a real possibility. Nothing good comes of it.

You always get this transfer of wealth to the top with socialism. The leaders are too big to jail. The socialism is never for thew socialist it is for the peasants.

Re: Bernie was trying to save you

All that I hear from Bernie...and Hillary ....and Democrats is "give free college"..okay great, where are the jobs for them???    "raise the minimum wage" okay great, what is going to stop a hamburger business from laying off and installing robot hamburger flippers???   "tax the wealthy"  okay great, what is going to stop them from ski daddling out of here?  and if the government starts taking over 50¢ out of every dollar they make, why aren`t they going to work the bare minimum and hitting the golf course rather than working for the fun of it???

Many of the Republicans say "cut small business taxes" okay great, but not everyone owns a business or works for a business.  Alot of people work for say Carrier Airconditioners, well 1400 jobs move to Mexico and now they are SOL. and have to take a part time job at Dollar General.

The big business/Farm Bureau idea (and i`m a proud Farm Bureau member) was "a rising tide lifts all boats" well, that has been tried in earnest for about 30 years now and it`s been a failure, look at the yearly US trade deficits for proof.

Unforunatel people and millenials have learnt the WRONG lesson from this disaster, now half of the people under 30 reject capitalism.  This free trade debacle has created 100 big losers for every one big winner.  It`ll get worse if it isn`t bad enough already, but thinking that we can tax the one big winner and leave the same free trade/open border system in place is a fool`s errand.

Re: Bernie was trying to save you

One person's votes or agitations probably don't matter much at all but my guess is that if extrapolated to their logical end point you will end up losing your patrimonial estate, which is and would remain pretty safe as long as our institutions remain intact.

Hayek, von Mises, Rand

The intellectual lights of the hard core conservatives.

Hayek and von Mises were European royalists who believed that popular governance led directly to the gulag. Rand's family were from the tiny Russian middle class under the Czar and lost everything to the revolution (and she was aided by the mentorship of a psychopathic serial killer).

That intellectual line of thought is leading us right back to royalty as the natural order of things.

The good news

as one who loosely ascribes to the Strauss/Howe generational view of US history, is that the wealth transfer line doesn't rise inexorably to the point of revolution and the end of the USA..

The US has gone through periodic convulsions that result in a generational tranfer of authority and a reset, which is how we've survived this long.

In many ways it is just as well that Sanders didn't win. The convulsion is coming and it we have to go through it before coming out on the backside.

He's set the tone for the conversation on how we emerge from a secular crisis and 10 or 20 million funerals from now.

Re: Bernie was trying to save you

BTW, not an insult- just a matter of fact- that for people in farming and other grinding plain vanilla small businesses, imagination is not a virtue, its a fault.

You, on the other hand, have quite a vivid imagination but it is entirely focused on identity based paranoia.

Which I'm guessing has been fed by the NRA and other trusted sources.

Re: Bernie was trying to save you

The problem is -- there can not be a "too big to fail" nor a "too big to jail" -- that lesson was not well learned in the past, and it has been repeated (because the "too bigs" have too much power and influence, and those who represent the rest of us can be bought).

Re: Bernie was trying to save you

It is not Bernie and the Democrats and socialists that have the "imagination"?  They say "free college"  "$15 minimum wage"  "open borders"  "90% tax brackets" ...all I`m asking is where are these jobs going to come from?   and Who is going to work at their productive job if they will only retain 40¢ or 10¢ out of every dollar that they make???    If it`s my imagination that is asking these unanswered questions ...well so be it, but if the answer was there, I feel that I`d have it by now.

Re: Bernie was trying to save you

I don't think Bernie and Liz can be bought.

Nor, Ron Paul, fwiw. But I've never been sure about Rand who simply had to be more flexible to become a senator from KY, as compared to the Red Dog congressional district the old man had.

And anyway, as was amply demonstrated in the primaries, libertarian republican is an oxymoron.
