There is probably no field where it is more confounding  to survey the surrounding landscape and wonder just whatever the ____ on God’s green earth some person might have done to sustain themself had they not plopped down where they happened to than proprietary production agriculture. 

Crazy thing in answer to your question is how easy being a part of it makes one able to make and rationalize arbitrary judgements.
