When the tide turned on the Eastern Front, the Nazis devoted considerable much needed resources to covering up the actions of the Einsatzgruppen- knowing that future knowledge of their actions would not be regarded kindly.
It takes a lot of men and material to dig up millions of bodies and destroy the evidence. They actually did a pretty good job. The often cited numbers are mostly reconstructed from previous census data etc. A lot of the bodies have never been located.
Like other “softer” forms of Holocaust denialism, it is only an academic question as to whether it was 1 or 4 million.
