Its always been my assumption that if the fruitloops ever killed fossil fuels like they want to the public backlash would be the end of them.   Folks tend to like eating and being warm.   Its coming.

  A single-cycle coal-fired plant is only at best 33% thermodynamic efficient,  combined-cycle barely 60%.  In contrast, wind & solar is 100% efficient because the energy is free.

  A next-generation nuclear beats natural gas by a mile.
