But that's not the only reason.

Republicans who hate Trump will likely sit out the election or vote for a Democrat and if DeSantis is the candidate a likely outcome is Trump supporters will site out the election.  So, no matter which is the Republican candidate, unless there is a massive unforeseen change Democrats have a lock on the White House.

And because the small Republican majority in the House won't accomplish miracles I suspect Democrats will return to power there.

Couple of things Ed from your rather good analysis of that situation.  The “sitting out” thing is what happened in the Democrat side of the ‘16 election. Likely millions of historically dependable D voters who left the top of the ticket blank rather than vote for HRC.  

And I’m guessing that the Democrats will take great care to run a pretty much spotless, personally attractive candidate. There is a surplus of them to select from. Very many of them women.

Oh, if only the Republicans could return to the good old days of John McCain, Bob Dole, Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan, the Bush & Cheney families, John Kasich, Chris Christy, Joe Scarborough, Jonah Goldberg, Nicole Wallace, Steve Schmidt, George Conway, Jim Comey, and George Will.

Oh what wonderful times we might have! More meaningless foreign wars, Chinese intrigue for corporate profits, and quid pro quo government spending on behalf of campaign donors might one day become legitimate once again.
