Re: Disturbing news

As near as i can tell, you folks think that working people are over paid and people that can't get a job are lazy and non productive and a welfare family prefers it that way.  Don't you ever question that mindset? Don't you think there are millions on unemployment that would like a job? I don't think you can build much of a future on welfare unless you are a farmer.

Well said Don!

Remember these are the same folks who think all Muslims are terrorists and anyone who does not 'believe' in their god is going straight to hell and can not be anything but bad.

Re: Disturbing news

It's not about paying taxes, it's about what the government program has done to the people it was suppose to help.

Re: Disturbing news

There are alot of welfare families who "prefer it that way."  Its the way they were raised and the way they are going to keep living.  I think most would prefer more cash so maybe you could lobby your congressman to provide that for them so they won't have to sell portions of their food stamp allocation.  The going rate around here is 60% cash in exchange for the use of the card.  That fraud is widespread.  Comparing welfare recipients to farmers who are subsidized is out of ignorance.  You obviously haven't observed the consequences of the welfare system on generations of people.  Your way is not working at all.   I would gladly give up any subsidy I receive if the government would do away will all subsidies, including welfare.  You would be very surprised to find that there are thousands, maybe millions, of welfare recipients who have taken over $500K from the welfare system in the last 15 years.  Here they get free housing, welfare checks based on number of kids, food stamps, utility subsidies....I don't know what else.  Keeping your head in the sand is no way to help people to help themselves.

Re: Disturbing news

Who would have thought a liberal would say something like you just did?  Do liberals all over the world operate from the same playbook?  So predictable....  I think you forgot to mention we are all racists too.  And throw in homophobic when you correct your mistake.

Re: Disturbing news

I find it very interesting that someone posted that "what your party [democrats] are doing has obviously not worked" or something to that effect. As I recall, over the past many years, Republicans have been in office and yet the only cuts in welfare have come from Democrats (Clinton). What were the Republicans doing? And, what has Obama done about welfare? Not much if anything unless you consider healthcare part of it. Face it - no one in government Democrat or Republican is addressing some of the angst posted here except for Bill Clinton. There have been Republican Presidents and House and Senate majorities and I don't seem to recall any of them being blamed. Very odd.....NOT.

I ALMOST FORGOT - Obama cut food stamps recently.

Re: Disturbing news

Just give me one example of some nonfarm welfare recipient that has harvestws $500K in welfare payments. Just one individual to justify your statement. If there are thousands or millions, name one.

Re: Disturbing news

The incarceration rate for white versus black is misleading as blacks and poorer folks will often get more jail time where whites or wealthier folks will often be able to avoid jail time.  They just recently changed the sentencing rules for crack cocaine more likely used by blacks versus regular cocaine more often used by whites to try and even up sentencing for possession.  I'm also guessing police will target areas frequented by blacks for illegal drug use more heavily then places where white folks purchase their drugs and it is easier to catch black users then whites.  I recently read in the news of a white lady working as a secretary for a law office had embezzled $120,000 from an estate and after being found guilty had her jail time and fine forgiven and received probation as long as she paid back the money she stole.  I'm betting if that was done by a black man he would be serving a few years of jail time.  Blacks are also more likely to get caught up the mandatory sentencing associated with the three strikes and your out law because they don't often get the same breaks as whites in their previous arrests.

No doubt many young black males do violate the laws more often then their white counter parts but I think their lower family incomes and lack of proper parenting and positive role models plays a big role in their troubles.  I also believe children from less educated families tend to not do as well in school.  So it easy to see where there become a vicious cycle where poor parents produce children that often go on to become poor parents leading to more and more children that have troubles in school and have more run ins with the law.

That is why I think it is very important to do all we can to get the message across to parents and especially younger parents just how important it is for their children that the parents try their best raising their young and pay attention to their progress in school.  This goes for all races but I think maybe with blacks having Obama and other positive black leaders doing the talking would have a greater impact.  To often young blacks look up to black rap artists and pro-athletes as their role models and they are not always very good role models.  I understand blacks worry about having their weaknesses or faults exposed publicly as no one would.  However we simply can not continue down the path we are on.  It can only lead to more problems and increased race and class tensions in the future.

Many blacks are raised in poorer neighborhoods and tend to stay living there where the job opportunities are not as good as where most of us live.  I think we need to spend more time and effort increasing job opportunities in these neighborhoods.  I would also favor drug testing for welfare recipients with those flunking the tests to be offered counseling in order to continue to stay eligible to receive their payments.

Re: Disturbing news

Recently here a 30 year old mother of 6 shot and killed a 25 year old mother of 5 at a nightclub at 2 a.m. in a fight over a man who was not the father of any of the 11 children.  The mother of 6 was getting over $1000 a month in food stamps.  She was living in free housing.  She was getting $142/month per child in welfare checks.  She was getting free health care at the local hospital and health unit.  I think if you add all that stuff up, put a value on the housing, healthcare, etc.,  it would amount to something close to $500K over 15 years.  That's how far back you went.  The more kids they have, the more they get as long as they aren't married and don't have a job.  That's a wonderful system you are trying to defend.

Re: Disturbing news

The Republican congress cut welfare and Clinton had to go along with it.  That's how welfare reform happened in the 90's.  The Democrats cut the food stamp program, I think I read starting in the year 2014.  I also read that several of the key Democrats said that it was in order to pass another program under the "pay-go" rules but that those cuts would be restored at a later date.

Re: Disturbing news

Drug testing would be a good idea.  Getting rid of penalties for having a wage earning husband would be another.
