But, what they will do is throw money at it and then feel good about themselves. At the same time they don't live their lives that way and don't teach their children that way either. As long as other people are paying the taxes to make them feel good.

While this thread started as a statement about the education problems of black men, then about welfare and blacks, my comments are directed at most people in the welfare system, black, white, or brown.  The vast majority of people in my area who are stuck in it are black.  That varies around the country.  If you ever saw the movie "Million Dollar Baby," the mother of the star character fussed at her daugher, the star, about "messing up her check"  after the daugher gave her a new house.  They were white people from West Virginia I think.  Liberals will find it surprising that there are many people who really do think like that.  It's a screwed up system and needs to be completely changed or scrapped all together.

I don't know but the farmer who got over $500K over the last 15 years got it mainly due to low prices for commodities he produced.  He is employing people with that money and contributing back to the system by paying taxes.  Someone on welfare, who relies solely on the government for everything for life, is no comparison to a farmer who gets a subsidy check.

Not so sure of your logic there cotman.

Individuals on welfare spend every last penny right back into the local economy because they do not have much to live on.

Bet that farmer getting hundreds of thousands of $ took at least one holiday, and outside the country too. That is welfare money that does not help the economy. At least not the US economy.

I know many who don't take trips outside of this country, although many have done mission work outside the US. Does that count too???

Yep, he got his business subsidized when things were tough.  However, if I spend 100% of my welfare check and he spends 50% of his, does it matter in the long run who spent the most?  Doesn't that money still go back into the economy and helps pay someone's salary?  Or do you believe as one of the great rightwing minds on here said a few days ago--"govt. workers don't pay taxes".  I guess because the welfare person can't hire people that the money they spend doesn't count.

What matters is that the welfare system rewards best if young girls have babies, don't get married,  live completely off the government, to not do much to better themselves, etc.  The farm program system has not rewarded the same behavior by my daughters, sons, wife or me.  I don't feel like I am a burden to society.  I think someone who lives completely off the taxpayer when they are physically able to tend to themselves is a burden to society.

You seemed to have stumbled on a secret so secret that I didn't even know it.  Farmers all over the country taking holidays abroad because of those ag subsidy checks.  I wish I had known that's what I am supposed to be doing that with them.  I've been using those funds to pay mundane bills and equipment payments, maybe rent a time or two.  Now I know what I've been missing.  So that's what Canadians do with theirs?

Not Canadians, we have virtually no subsidies.

There are 'insurance' programs that we can buy with a premium up front for low income. Not many payouts unless there is a really bad year and if you are specialized. Not specialized means one enterprise invariably will keep income high enough to not collect.

Some prairie farmers may get something this year with all their wet weather but then production insurance, another premium, will probably help out there so maybe income will not be low enough to collect on 'income insurance'.

We are a 'socialist' country so we do not have a 'farm plan' to give money to farmers like 'free enterprise' countries do.
