Re: Farm Bill ideas

Nobody would force you to change or not grow corn beans corn beans corn beans.

They just wouldn't pay you to.

Re: Farm Bill ideas

Acknowledging the substantial disruption vs. the status quo, they would pay you very handsomely. Up front, then you're on your own.

As I noted, the timeline is actually a sweetheart for the majority of farmers, who could retire most any time and if they want to continue to farm for their fun and health for another 20 years nobody is stopping them.

Depending on when they pass away, might, or might not be a great deal for their heirs. The market.

Re: Farm Bill ideas

A couple of the farm bills were described as "the farm bill to end all farm bills" and of course it didn`t happen.   The real purpose of farm subsidies is "cheap food" and shoring up the ag lending industry.   If you`re in the sweet spot that owns a lot of farmland to rent out, it indirectly goes to the property owner, one way or another.

But to give 5yrs of farm payments up front, what would you base it on PLC or ARC or CFAP or MFP or all combined? And could you take payments over years or one lump sum?  The lump sum, you`d get eaten alive with taxes.

Would there be payment limitations?  Because a guy that rents 30,000 acres would make out like a bandit, he would get rewarded for being most of the problem.

Re: Farm Bill ideas

No. The real purpose of Farm Bills is to buy votes.

We are near the point when the reality strikes home.

If a buyout comes along, take it while you can.

Re: Farm Bill ideas

You could offer a 5 year plan for the payments for people who are "going broke but the taxes are killing me."

Re: Farm Bill ideas

You CAN "go broke" and get creamed with taxes at the same time...find someone whose done something and ask them.  Just a quick example if you buy a farm, the payments are made with "after tax dollars".

I know your narrative is "farmers get a government check and vote Republican" there isn`t enough farmers percentage-wise to carry a district or state even "Steve King`s district" not even 5% actual farmers ..it`s really that we`re Rednecks and like guns & secure borders and will vote for the conservative regardless the amount of MFP payment.  The Carpenter, plumber, electrician, small town businessperson, truckdriver, factoryworker, welder, lineman, millwright ect tend to be conservatives.

Farm bills are rewards for production, look at EVERY program, the more you produce, the bigger your mailbox check is...250 bushel yield on 30,000 acres and you get one hell of a lot of $250,000 checks for each of your entities.  If you`re a poor son of a bitch with 100 bushel yield on 80 acres, you and the missus can get a couple Happy Meals and that`s about it.

Re: Farm Bill ideas

I don’t have a big problem with paying farmers- at least for a while.

But no reason to pay people to grow corn, beans, wheat etc.

Re: Farm Bill ideas

To have cheap food, you have to purge the "inefficient" (what has been what`s going on for 30 years now).  Trouble is, being a over-achiever doesn`t always pan out, sometimes the good Uncle has to bailout his prodigy "nephews".
