Luke 22:36

Jesus said to them "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag: and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one..."

Jesus has said that many will use his words wrongly, and decieve many, which is why his quotes need to be read in the context in which they were made.

When Jesus said that those who will live by the sword shall die by the sword, it is in the context of the priests and soldiers coming to get Jesus to fulfill his destiny.  The most obvious meaning of his words, would be to put your sword down, as members of the Roman army are involved in apprehending Jesus, and that attacking them with a sword, would bring a horde of other soldiers with swords, and a fight would just result in the deciphle's dying because of it.

Another reason would also be that Jesus was to sacrifice himself for our sins, which would mean he was to go willingly, not after a battle.

However, in Luke 22:36, he emplores the deciphles to get a sword, it was before he prayed at the Mount of Olives, and before his arrest.  So, it is pretty easy to deduce that while he wanted his deciphles to be armed, and not helpless.  However, when they came for him, Jesus didn't want them to fight his arrest.   To me, it says that Jesus wanted them to have a sword for their own protection, and not to fight his arrest.
