Re: Further and further to the right
Geez, dagwud, are you that bigoted? It was a different time, and situation! I must also remind you?
A wise man changes his mind, a fool never!

I must really be getting senile as this is yet another post that makes no sense to me. The only part I get is your racist remark as it has become the standard reply be many when they have nothing to respond with. Sort of like a frustrated child on the play ground saying, "Oh yeah, well your stupid then."
To be fair some Repubs did the same under Bush calling those that did not agree with Bush's reactions after 9-11, un-American.
Since you and others have well over played your race card might I suggest something new you could throw out in the future when not sure how to respond with comments you don't agree with. Perhaps, baby rapist, cute baby kitten killer, or maybe hater of apple pie and baseball. Not sure about the last one as the Repubs may have that in their deck of cards. I guess for some anything beats an intelligent answer that deals accurately with the conversation at hand.

Sorry, dagwud. From now on, now that I know you need to have it spelled out for you, I will try to make it so you can understand it. I really thought you were more preceptive, but you've probably been spending some long hours in the field.

Re: Further and further to the right
GTO, I went back and re-read the entire thread. It appears your post, "It was a different time, and situation!" is your attempt at an excuse to cover up for Obama's flip flop on raising the debt ceiling. I myself think he was right the first time when as a freshmen Senator he said, "The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. ... Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that 'the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem."
Perhaps you can explain to me how Obama's quote above is not accurate today? Explain to me how the time and situation are so different today. Sounds like more of to big to fail to me.
For a man who hates evil Repubs who supposedly cater to the rich friends you may want to do some reading on where a good chunk of all the bail out and stimulus money is ending up? Here is just one of many stories that shows you how the rich are doing quite well under these various bail out and stimulus programs.
I myself just don't buy the excuse that if we don't raise our debt limit then other countries will no longer invest in America because our country's credit rating will drop. Tell me where else will China invest all their money? European countries that are worse shape then us? Japan which they hate and refuse to invest in? Even with a lower credit rating we are a far more attractive investment then most other countries. If I was investing money and saw that the U.S. was finally getting serious about addressing their debt problem then I would feel more comfortable investing in then then if they just continued to raise their debt limit.
I'm curious if I can be considered just half racist since I agreed with Obama's quote above as a freshmen Senator concerning raising the debt limit and think it was spot on but disagree with him on wanting to raise it now?

Re: Further and further to the right
The "Generations" view of things would say that we are in a profoundly conservative period that is driven by the point in life that the culturally dominant generation- the boomers- find themselves.
Entering elderhood they (we) are following the standard life cycle. As I've mentioned many times, I know lots of contemporaries who were playing at being pothead liberals in their youth (when I was a Young Republican) and have now become complete misanthropic Beckheads.
The hope in the election was that it was highly consistent with the cyclical imperitive to put the boomers out to pasture. The culture wars of the -60s and 70s are over but the boom generation will never be able to let it go.
The interesting and somewhat unexpected twist seems to me to be that the younger generations did not turn out in number in the midterm elections. Somebody can and will take up and run with the "these kids these days" theme but my take is that Obama and his brain trust really don't understand the generational significance of this presidency. They needed to deliver change and didn't.

Re: Further and further to the right
Nox, I agree with most of what you said however I do think Obama and his people recognize the importance of the younger voters. They know they helped get them elected. Trouble is us old farts tend to vote all the time where the younger generation tends to vote much less often and generally only during presidential elections.
Your mention of Obama's failure to deliver change brings up an interesting question. Just as the nut case preacher who predicted May 21 would be the day of rapture, will Obama's and the preacher's followers believe in their promises the next time around? I'm thinking there will far less people willing to sell their personal belongings and go preach about the upcoming rapture in Oct. just as I wonder if Obama will have a harder time encouraging the younger folks to believing in his call for change after 4 years of more of the same. I was one of those who bought into the promise of change and admit I will be very skeptic of similar promises in 2012.
