Great Backyard Bird Count

For any of you who watch the birds you might find this of interest.

A chance to count the birds you see during this weekend, starts Friday, and record them online to add to a continent wide count.

We have participated for a number of years and you can take as much or as little time as you wish for all of the 4 days or only one.

More details here http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc/ from checklists for your area to a link to the site to record what birds you have seen.

Have fun!

Re: Great Backyard Bird Count

Thought I would pass on this little bit.  Yesterday morning about 7AM I raised the blinds on the french doors to the bedroom and counted 32 Gambel's quail in my backyard with about 15 more in a tree at the edge of the yard.  We also have lots of Dove--Inca, White Wing, Mourning and banded around here.  They nest all over the yard.  However, I have NEVER seen that many quail here at one time before!!

Re: Great Backyard Bird Count

We always 'feed the birds' here and enjoy seeing just what all comes.

Have had lots of colour this year with as many as 12 Cardinals at a time.

Mix them with the Blue Jays which can number 20 or more at a time and there is lots of colour.

Our highlight so far this year was an Eagle that perched on some trees at the road for several days back in January.

Waiting to see some Robins then I will know spring is on the way.

Probably had a little sap flow in the maples today with temperature up to +5C so spring is getting closer.

Re: Great Backyard Bird Count

In Arkansas, we have our annual count in December. Today and last week however, I have seen something I think is amazing - an albino Red-tail hawk. I think it is a Red-tail anyway. It is a solid white buteo that sits high atop a tree. Maybe I can get a picture. I have been a birder for ten or more years and have near 200 on my life list, but the last several years, I haven't had much time for it. Birds are amazing creatures and I love watching and identifying them.

There is an annual count in different localities here too often on Jan. 1st or the last day or so of Dec.

This count is continent wide for the 4 days and it is compiled on the one site.

Even if you do not count and enter your info you can search the records to see what all was spotted.

Different searches allowed from grand total down to postal code.
