One small piece of historyu- Holy Loch on the west coast of Scotland was probably the major forwar sub base for the US during the duration of the cold War, as well as the major Royal Navy sub base in WWI and II.
Also, all the UK's nuclear assets are now located in Scotland, a problem they're going to have to sort out.
Can't really blame them , though, that they simply want to go about being a nice social democracy like Denmark or Sweden and not play any further games with the folks in London wanting to fight above their weight class in world affairs.
