Hooray, Republicans to end all farm programs.

The contract says deficits are bad but they want to continue with tax cuts that add $3.7 trillion to the deficit over a decade.

Olnly programs for seniors, veterans and the military are to be left untouched on the spending side.

Ergo, all farm spending will have to go, along with everything else other than what is mentioned above.

Seniors, medicare,  and military should at least be frozen. If you want to be the budget director , I'll help and i'd work for room and board. To be fair, if it would appear that even part of a United states austerity program would be legitimately implemented, the dollar would take off higher. that would not be good for the ag for the short term.

Re: Hooray, Republicans to end all farm programs.

Not if it was accompanied by massive QE, which is the only way that fiscal austerity isn't a disaster under these circumstances.

The probability of any degree of consensus on such a bold and radical plan approaches 0.

I have no problem donating my pittance to the greater cause......But the Republicans had better act like Republicans and not squander those sacrifices on Obamacare, cap and trade, bailouts and crap like that. It`s obvious everyone will have to make allowances, just don`t use those windfalls to add to the already bloated entitlement culture.

Re: Hooray, Republicans to end all farm programs.

WCCO had a call in radio program yesterday morning , and one articulate gentleman called in with his thoughts on the terrible socialism that Obama was implementing, from Obamacare to socializing the Wall Street losses, GMC, ...right on down the pike.

The moderator then asked the man how old he was....73...and then if he availed himself of medicare and social security and what he thought of those social programs. Man, you could have heard a pin drop. Finally, the older guy said that these programs were already in place, millions used them, as did he, and they were ok.

Its ok to gore an Ox if its someone elses ox being gored.

The truth is that all of the government programs need to be cut...slashed...just like Britain is doing. Medicare, Social Security, Defense spending, Farm programs....endowment for the nudist arts...you name it. Cut them all right down to the bare bones. And let the prices fall if that need be....for a government to inflate its debt is third world.

There are ways to cut the national debt by selling off some of the assets that the federal government owns. We , as a people have gotten ourselves into this mess....we will have to swallow the bitter pill to get well again. If federal land gets sold off, so be it. Taxes will have to be raised, also...but not to fund the retirement of already wealthy people.

Farm programs were slated to be phased out way back in the 1980's. Remember, that was part of Freedom to Farm.

Start by repealing the Medicare part D drug plan that they all voted for?

Without funding it, I might add.

In the name of charity I would gladly take in a few of the unemployed nudist models who will certainly lose their jobs without government funding, provided that they are female, have taken good care of themselves, have blonde hair, blue eyes, weigh less than 135 lbs.

Re: Hooray, Republicans to end all farm programs.

From what I've been able to gather it looks like their proposal, which they say is centered around reducing the deficit, will attempt to reduce it by allowing it to grow larger.

And it appears that is going to be a winning strategy.

Strange times.

It would be a shame in a way because all my government payments go back to our local school in property taxes.  Of course my payments are only a portion of the money the school gets and I have to kick in a significant amount myself.

Maybe they'd get rid of the grants to cities for their sewers, bike paths and streets too.  What would be great is if they cut out every welfare program and "help" program.  I don't think I'd mind paying 90% less in taxes.
