Re: HuffPo sticks nose in Ag
Yeah, Huff-po might want to talk to an actual farmer. That is complete bull crap, that story isn`t just wrong about a few things, everything in the story is 100% wrong. I mean flip a coin Huff-Po and you`ll be 50% right over time, but 100% wrong, that is an achievement.

Re: HuffPo sticks nose in Ag
We were in the cherry growing area of WI a few years ago, and the farmer couldn't get workers to come in to help harvest the crop. He had a beautiful crop - the trees were loaded, and they got infected with a fungus. He couldn't get it knocked down, and was in the process of losing 70% of his crop, because he COULDN'T FIND PEOPLE TO PICK IT. Even offering $20.00 an hour, there were no takers.
BA, you really live under an illusion that these jobs will be done by those on welfare. It won't happen. It's easier to steal, or go to prison, than go sit on a ladder picking fruit in the hot sun day after day.
Get ready to build more prisons, and pay even bigger bucks to maintain people there, than we are now. Along with more deaths as people become more and more desperate. And probably more drugs and prostitution, as it's an easier way to make a living.
You think Trump World is going to be utopia? Just wait...and see....

So with $20/hr and Obama immigration policy the farmer still couldn't find workers. Well that the best case ever made for sending the ILLEGALS home. They refuse to do the work Americans refuse to do even when they are offered $20/hr.

Re: HuffPo sticks nose in Ag
My custom combining friend, he gets his people from Brazil to help with his harvest season - Americans don't show up after the first day.

Yeah, all the ILLEGALS were working the other orchards and there none left for this poor guy. If only Obama would have shipped a few more his way......

Re: HuffPo sticks nose in Ag
$20/hr? Did they use all their fingers and toes counting that? Maybe they should borrow their neighbor`s fingers and count to $25 or $30. The damned seedcorn companies know how to count asking $250, $300, $400 a bag for seed. If school districts don`t attract enough teachers at a $45,000 salary, they don`t bat a eye at paying $50,000...$60,000...$70,000 for more teachers, but that is "other people`s money" of course.
So what you are saying is, Americans won`t pick cherries for $20/hr and would rather go on welfare and if we take their welfare away, they will rob us and then we will have to build prisons to house them? Man, that is messed up! How about they rob us and we throw them in prison and make them pick cherries, since they would rather not do it legitimately?
But the liberal "answer" of course is to drag in Mexicans (who I seriously doubt are paid $20/hr to pick cherries) and let them bring the wife and kids in and then hatch more when they ain`t pickin` cherries and give them all citizenship and a Democrat voting card (gotta vote if you`re a citizen ya know). They wake up one day and say "Hey, we`re American citizens now, why should we pick cherries??? Why don`t we go on welfare like the rest of `em and if we don`t get welfare then we will rob them".
Nope that is a messed up business model. Just like the plantation owners in the 1700s that said "we can`t get any one to pick our cotton...I know, let`s go to Africa and git some Negroes to pick our cotton...they`ll do it cheap" . Well, drive through Detroit, Chicago and St Louis and see how that cotton pickin brain fart worked out for us.

Part of the problem, is the Mexicans are already away from home. They are willing to make do for whatever they need to for housing, while they are here earning a wage.
Americans? You ship them up from Chicago to pick cherries, and they will EXPECT to be given room and board at the nearest 4 star hotel, at least.
I'm there with ya, BA on the problem. Most of America is. But you tell me, how are you going to get someone to to work, that would rather go to jail first, because it's easier?
Have you ever taught a class - of anything? Do you know how difficult it is to teach, when you have students in the class that don't want to be there? Don't want to learn? But are being forced to do it for what ever reason? Wel, it's sorta like that. Many of these people don't WANT TO WORK. Period. You can take them to the orchard to pick, but they will probably only pick what they are going to eat.
I'm there with you BA on this, I really am. I just know from experience, that without some kind of physical threat, like was used to keep slaves in line, it will probably be difficult, at best, to force people to work. Add in the drugs and all the other problems, and it's a near impossible situation, and one that I agree, is probably not going to end well.
