Huge Wind Storm Across Iowa

Most of Iowa has braced for a huge windstorm that’s lashed nearly 100 mph winds. This is the grain bins on the north side of Minburn, Iowa. SE of Perry.

Thanks for posting, Craig.  I saw it was hurricane winds down there on the noon news.  NCIA so far just light much much needed rain.  Hauled cattle to Algona, a lot of heavyweights out there, prices suck .95 to $101

Re: Huge Wind Storm Across Iowa

I am hearing of entire fields of flat corn. 50,000 folks without electricity. I am going to have to walk pasture fences to make sure that the trees are not on the fence wires.

We had that same thing on 8-25-2018. Flat corn never stood back up. Shelled acre after acre at 1.5MPH going one way. Not to try to pick up more corn, the only way it would feed in. Finished shelling on 4-11-2019 using the grain head. My prayers for the owners of all of those acres.

Re: Huge Wind Storm Across Iowa

Reports are that Ten Million acres of crop land has been destroyed. Half a million households were without electricity at one point. Grain storage bins in countless locations were completely destroyed. 13 counties are declared disaster areas.
Our farm only had minor damage with 60 mph winds.

Thanks, Sam. I wonder what the markets will do with that much crop loss?

Re: Huge Wind Storm Across Iowa

Yes. Was thinking the same. Good to hear you are OK.

Looking at photos on newspapers sites across the path it looks horrible.  Going to take a lot of everything....i’ve been involved in a number of tornado cleanups but generally isolated and everybody who was able bodied showed up and usually made rather quick work of things.

Nothing at all like that. And 10 years ago there were a lot more people in a rural area young and able and with the freedom to pick up and go help.

Re: Huge Wind Storm Across Iowa

I called my cousin a while ago , NE of Des Moines, right in the teeth of the worst 100 mph winds. I offered to come help with anything that needs cleaned up or trees cut up. He doesn’t really know where to begin. It is going to take a long time to get it done. Fortunately, I have lots of wood cutting equipment and experience in using it.
