Re: Kaiser von Trumpsky

"If the war didn't happen to kill you, it was bound to start you thinking."

George Orwell on WW I

---------------------------------------

The curse of knowing too much history is that after awhile it all just begins to scare the bajeebers out of you. So with that in mind, here are three WW I books you might also find interesting, if not disturbing as well.

1) Catastrophe 1914: Europe goes to war (2013) Max Hastings, pub. Alfred A. Knopf: NY

2) The Illusion of Victory (2003) Thomas Fleming, pub. Basic Books: NY

3) Liaison 1914 (orig. 1930/1968 ed.) Major General Sir Edward Spears, pub. Stein and Day: NY

Both Hastings and Fleming do a fair job in explaining the historical lead up to the armed hostilities in August 1914. The Brits were seeking to constrain German ambitions for having their own empire [Also, and for what it is worth; the Brits had been actively war gaming naval wars against Teddy Roosevelt's growing "Great White Fleet" of dreadnoughts during this period.]. The French wanted face saving revenge for their decisive defeats suffered during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. The Germans under the haughty Kaiser and an emboldened German General Staff were demanding world respect that was commensurate with the world economic power they had become. At the other end of the spectrum was Russia's Czar Nicholas II who forgot his backward empire was no match for Germany's military might. And lastly, the original sick man of Europe, Austro-Hungary and its Ottoman Empire had not yet realized it were already a dead man walking by the turn of the century.

Throw in some healthy doses of individual hubris on the part of the different belligerant leaders, national pride that turned false for many in the firestorm of war, gross collective under-estimations of an opposing army's capabilities, their resolve, their tolerance of extraordinary pain, and each country's unexpected economic resiliency; and you have the makings of a disaster of global proportions.

General Spears book is just an eye witness account of how really (really) ugly those first five weeks in August and early September 1914 had become for all sides. To borrow the words of Joseph Stalin from a later war: "It took a very brave man to be a coward" in the German, Russian, British, or French Armies during the opening days of WW I. According to Spears, merely getting lost, falling out due to physical exhaustion, or just separated from one's own unit could oftentimes mean a summary firing squad at the hands of your own army's command.

Horrible yes. Could it ever happen again? Absolutely yes, but ahhh what memories...ehh?

Re: Kaiser von Trumpsky

one would think and hope that the type of warfare conducted with huge armies has been rendored obsolete. If, however, some worldwide mechanism is ever devised that will render nuclear weapons impotent, massive wars probably could happen, but how likely is that?

The biggest danger right now is rogue players, such as Iran, North Korea, etc. starting armageddon with some deranged act. Maybe it s time to build more fallout shelters.

"Only the dead have seen the end of war."
Plato*

*attributed to, but probably not accurately linked to the great scholar. Nevertheless, the quote is a useful reminder that man's employment of the instruments of human violence have not yet been outlawed by either nature or man himself.

Re: Kaiser von Trumpsky

I guess we can only hope Packard.

Hope that man finally stops hating,

quits just believing in things with no evidence

Stops discriminating against 'those others' just because they are different in some way

Maybe someday our ancestors will accept the world the way it is in all its diversity and just live together in peace.

That would mean many/most of our leaders today would not be around and certainly NOT in power.

Re: Kaiser von Trumpsky

snip-

Avengers (2012) director Joss Whedon is at it again — but this time he's not attacking President Trump or House Speaker Paul Ryan. This time, he went after Trump's family.

"Hey, keep your eyes on this f**king prize too," Whedon tweeted on Tuesday, with a photo of Trump's son-in-law Jared Krushner. "He's a Voldemort in training, & unlike the Pekingese he married under, can play the long game."

These insults might require some interpretation. The most offensive slur is likely the "Pekingese" comment. The term refers to the Peking lion dog, an ancient breed of minuscule "toy" dog originating in China. In one fell swoop, Whedon attacked First Daughter Ivanka Trump as a female dog and a puny "toy" one, at that.

But the Voldemort reference was also a vile insult. In J.K. Rowling's masterful Harry Potter series, the ultimate villain Tom Riddle adopted the name "Lord Voldemort," a name so evil that even to whisper it is literally a curse. Voldemort is a blood-thirsty murderer, but he is also a racist — one who looks down on anyone with "impure" blood and wantonly kills them without even thinking.

Kushner is a successful businessman: a real estate investor and developer, publisher, and senior adviser to his father-in-law. Naturally, this has led many to question if his position on Trump's team involves a conflict of interest.

But Kushner is also the grandson of Holocaust survivors and is a lifelong Jew. His wife Ivanka converted to Judaism, and they are raising three children. Even if Kushner has a hidden dark side, he is no Voldemort, and Whedon really should know better. In fact, it is arguably verging on anti-Semitism to attack Trump's son-in-law in this fashion.
