Re: Happening today

I am covered by BC/BS.  I'm not sure that all government occupations, but some of them, continue group coverage into retirement.  Occupation that are considered hazardous to your health, are among those that the participants are able to get group coverage, and the same plan, as if they were still employed.  When I took the job as an Air Traffic Controller, it was explained to me, but I didn't realize how big of a perk it was, until I was forced to retire from Air Traffic at 52.  Air Traffic Controllers are forced to retire on their 56th birthday, if they were lucky enough to make it that far.  Many of us don't, and, like me, lose their medical qualifications before that.

I would have never retired from the job.  I loved it....but it was killing me slowly, just the same.

I paid my dues for my extended health care.  Your welcome to my cardio system, any time you want it.   I've said before that we laughed about the job killing us.  For some of us, it really was...

Re: Happening today

But, remember, this is a fairly special case.  As an Air Traffic Controller, you MUST be hired by the time you are 26.  You MUST retire at 56.  And we were all REQUIRED to belong to one of the health care options that were offered.  They were pretty much all the same, and offered more or less the same coverage.

At lot of it had to do with the requirement of being forced to retire at 56.  And, trust me, you really don't want someone controlling airplanes after 56.  The insurance covers us, until we are eligible for Medicare.

It's a young person's game....it really is.  Even at 52, I could tell that I wasn't as sharp as I had been.  What made it able for me to do the job, was experience.

If you think that controllers should work to 65 - go for it.  Tell our so called president all about it.  And the air traffic professionals all over the country, will make sure that they have the most qualified (read as: the longest on the job) controller at the mike!!!
