Looks like Mourdock is going to beat Lugar

Oh well, the end of a notable career. I had a feeling he should have hung it up this time.

But as far as political alignmnet it doesn't matter- Lugar has always had a very conservative voting record- he just would differ from the party line on some high profile occasions- and once he smelled the change in the atmosphere in 2009 he's been 100%.

If anything probably increases the probability of the seat going D in the fall but that's a long ways away.

One very serious matter that **bleep** deserves to pay for- he was one of the GOP gang that snuck the Commdoity Futures Modernization Act into a bill and passed it in 30 minutes back in 2000. Given that his worthy opponent is agin' da gummint, I'm guessing he woud have done the same, only more. Other than that just the nicks and cuts of time and the fact that he was civil with BHO.

Also may signal the end of the 40 years of the old politicla order that has run the Indiana GOP.

I will not count my chickens before they hatch, but if D i c k is defeated it will be because of TARP.

Voting for Obama's 2 supreme court justices didn't help he either.

Re: Looks like Mourdock is going to beat Lugar

40 years? Was it 40 years ago that Stevensen and the KKK were termpered?

Re: Looks like Mourdock is going to beat Lugar

Along the lines of what I said, he voted for the whole series of Clinton/Ginrich/Army/Gramm crapola that created TBTF.

And the only way you're not going to bail out TBTFs is if you are either 1)going to not let them get that big in the first place or 2)suicidal.

So yes, but in a little bit more complicated manner than the "us good folks are going to put a quick end to this" line.

The ONLY thing that creates to big to fail is to not allow failure.

Re: Looks like Mourdock is going to beat Lugar

In retrospect a monumental political opportunity. Nobody had to bear the consequence of letting TBTF fail but many reaped the political benefit of the unpopularity of the actions.

I think I'm 100% correct- the greater verdict of history seems to be to place responsibility on those who permitted TBTF to happen- a bipartisan lot but majority GOP in numbers and leadership.

That lesson seems not to have been learned at all, though.

But still hard to shed too many tears for Lugar based on that although I don't see where Mourdock gets it at all either.

In a broader sense it is just another case of anyone on either side getting slaughtered if they trend toward the center at all.

Re: Looks like Mourdock is going to beat Lugar

Now TARP is the center?

Re: Looks like Mourdock is going to beat Lugar

Well, OK, somewhat to the right of center, being a Bush/Paulson program.

It seems more than anything else that Mourdock went all-in when he got caught long a bunch of Chrysler bonds in state pension plans and then suddenly became the most outspoken anti-auto bailout official in the country.
