You can make the argument that Muslims are the new Jews. Jews in the U.S. have pretty much melded into the population. They don't nearly so much live in the same area, take the same jobs, work in the same business, and club together so much as they used to.
Holding yourself apart is a good way to become a target.
Muslims have unique dress, religious practices (like praying 5 times a day, fasting) that don't blend into contemporary society, social practices and so forth. This draws attention to them and invites the ignorant and prejudices to target them.
Like the song says, "time changes everything".
