Memorial Day

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, and was observed on May 30th when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. After World War I, the holiday was changed from honoring Americans who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war.

With the passage of the National Holiday Act in 1971, Memorial Day became a three-day weekend celebration. For most Americans, it marks the beginning of summer. It has become a time of family outings, picnics, ropings and ballgames. I would venture to say many Americans have little to no idea why Memorial Day was established in the first place. That is very sad.

We Americans have much to be thankful for. Although slowly slipping away, we still have rights and freedoms and privileges that many in this world can only dream about. Most Americans live a life of luxury that most of the world’s inhabitants can’t even imagine or comprehend. Much of what we enjoy we owe to the fighting men and women who were willing to give up their lives for our country.

On this Memorial Day weekend, I think it would be appropriate for us to pause for a moment to remember and honor all the men and women who lost their lives fighting for our country. We owe them a debt that we simply cannot repay. Remember the families that have lost loved ones. Honor all veterans who risked their lives to serve our country. Thank God for the many blessings we have as Americans. Ask God to continue to guide, direct and bless America. Pray for those young men and women who are currently working and living in dangerous situations as they bravely and unselfishly serve their country.

If you give working people an extra day off they are going to try and enjoy it. Life is short and time with family precious. They may cook out or go to a fun event instead of being in a state of quite reflection all day. The best way to celebrate the sacrifice of those who died in war is to live.

There is nothing wrong with enjoying a day off with family, having fun. That is what our fallen soldiers fought to preserve with their lives given for their country. 

However, it is not too much to expect from citizens to be grateful for their liberties by taking a little time to honor those whom gave the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms that Americans enjoy today. 

I marched with the marching band to the cemetery, where they played selected patriotic songs, Taps, and the National Anthem. I made sure that no one was overcome by the heat. Later, I helped the VFW veterans put away the 563 flags that represent one veteran that has passed away locally.  Some of these guys are in their eighties. 

Several high school students came to help as well.  

It means a lot to me to use Memorial Day, to remember our fallen.

One. Learned....no, knew instinctively after observing those contemporaries of mine in my circle of acquaintances and family and their “experiences” that extreme humility was the order of the day.  

Like Earl Butz said about The Pope and family planning....”He no playa the game, he no maka the rules”.

Had a few drinks a couple of weeks ago with my brother who spent 25 years chasing Soviet subs around the globe.

He got some giggles going over being at a game where they were honoring some Hero who was a supply clerk in Oklahoma.

There has to be a bunch of sore arms today amoung the goppers from all the flag waving and patting themselves on the back for being such great patriots!!
