Re: Mike Rowe Schools Bernie Sanders on Labor.

I`m not talking about cutting social security only saving it for those that really need it.  And you don`t give SS checks to millionaires and you raise the retirement age, if you want to preserve it for the needy.

You liberals really need to understand that not everyone is "college material". Someone skating through high school with C`s or below, maybe should look at a trade school or some of us need to have a 'dirty job" that doesn`t require brain power only muscles.  And the government should put their thumb on the scale in favor of those of us C students out here.  The hogs don`t get slaughtered, the houses don`t get framed, the mail don`t get delivered without C students...God Bless all of us C students!

The country is broke and sending C students to free college will break us even more.  just because someone is a C student doesn`t mean you are stuck there, work and study and take night classes that fit your schedule.  And if you are creative there will be the incentive to maybe become a "B student" when you own money is on the line.

Re: Mike Rowe Schools Bernie Sanders on Labor.

....and the continuous reduction in state support has nothing to do with it.

We're committing $1.5T to the F-35.  Fighting two wars of choice will cost us somewhere between $3-5B before the meter stops running in 50 years or so and the wars that those spawned don't have an end in sight.

Paying community college tuition for 2 million kids per year costs around $5B.

I think I'm in favor of beating the swords into plowshares and taking my chances.

Same was said about the war on poverty and Obama care. It will start out 2 years of community college and end up 4 years college of choice costing trillions.

Are you suggesting that businesses only pay higher wages when they are forced to do so?

That sounds like an excellent argument for increasing the minimum wage!

Re: Mike Rowe Schools Bernie Sanders on Labor.

Of course Don, businesses only pay more when supply and demand force them to do so.  Take you for example, you hire a relative to custom farm your land for $150/acre with the implied idea that he will one day get to rent or buy it wink wink hey I`m not judging here, it`s a landlowner`s market out here.  But you`re a cutthroat businessman, now if your custom farmer wanted to raise his charge from $150/acre to $250/acre...you`d tell him to "go play in the highway" and you`d find someone that would do your custom work for $180/acre.

That is because...listen closely now.THERE ARE MORE FARMERS THAN THERE IS LAND TO GO AROUND therefore you can set the rates that you pay at the lowest possible amount and they will thank you for the "opportunity".

Business will pay more for labor when the demand for labor out paces the supply of labor.

Re: Mike Rowe Schools Bernie Sanders on Labor.

How do the countries who do have free higher educational do it? You may not say cut SS but the people you put in Congress say it therefore, YOU say it by proxie!  I was a C student in HS because all I thought about was athletics.  I went to college on a BB scholarship and flunked out my Jr year.  I went into the army for 4 years, spent a year studying Russian and came back and made the Dean's and President's list my last two years in Animal Science.  According to you I shouldn't have gone to college.  I knew a lot of folks who went to trade school or two year nursing and other medical fields.  But everyone should havetheopportunitytodo as much as they possibly canandthere is NO reason for college to cost as much as it does.  Instead of Education, they are businesses.  That is wrong.  I knew a young Berliner, who was a small animal vet. He was 24 and had been practicing for almost 3 yrs.   He didn't have to take another fours years of German language, math, world and German history like we do. 12 years of those subjects should be enough.  He wanted to be a veterinarian, had the grades in Hoch Schule and went straight to vet school and finished in about 3 years and became a Doctor!  It takes at least 7 years here and usually 8!!!  We have a lot of room for improvement but we have to stop protecting the rich and take away their loopholes!!  If that makes me a socialist then I wear it with pride!

Re: Mike Rowe Schools Bernie Sanders on Labor.

I didn`t say that C students shouldn`t go to college, I`ll bet you didn`t get free college, yet you got on the Deans list after you matured and went there on your own.  I don`t like Bernie`s free college plan because not everyone is "college material"...that`s not to say after 5 years they sow their wild oats they might be fine, but "free college" isn`t free, someone pays for it.

But the exercise of putting in the required years to qualify for a certain job is to show that you have the commitment.  Like the Air Force, the way I understood it at one time and I didn`t join so I`m not certain, but they wanted you to have a degree, even if it was a English degree, you get that and you go in as a Lieutenant and can fly planes if you physically qualify.   It`s similar for medicine too, that long regiment weeds out the unmotivated.

If there was free college, most kids would go, just because it would be "free" in that someone else would pay for it.  And like Obamacare and insurance companies raising premiums, the colleges would raise their tuition as they would have no shortage of "customers" as the taxpayers would be making good on the tab.

And God help the "non-traditional student" that wouldn`t qualify for "free" college, as they would pay through the nose.

Re: Mike Rowe Schools Bernie Sanders on Labor.

"Free" college is a win win for Dems. Buy their vote by giving them "free" college when they are young and dumb. And because of the Increase in students, the teacher union memberships increase and government union membership increases for more administration of this program. That is more government control.

And the biggy...for every increased % of students there will be an increase in the need for more staff to teach. These will come from those that didn't make the cut before and in turn, will lower the general quality of the education even more.
