 Bring the bill to raise the debt ceiling forward in the regular way, let the republican block it with the filibuster as many times as the republicans please, and shut the government down.  About the time those Social Security checks don't go out the republicans will get the message.

... feel like playing chicken with the debt ceiling.  And every few tears they end up with egg on their faces.

  The thing is, whenever the republicans are in charge, they have no qualms about cutting taxes and loading additional spending on the debt.  If the republicans cut spending the same time they cut taxes, they might have some justification for not raising the debt ceiling but they never do.  They're total hypocrites.
