Murder rates

In the past there have been stories posted that claim having guns lower crime rates in some cities in the USA.

So this story is an example of low murder rates in a city just south of a large US city.

Windsor Ontario has gone 2 years with no murders and just across the river Detroit had 308 murders in 2010 plus how many more this year.

Differences?

Someone in Detroit pointed to their high unemploment rate BUT Windsor has one of the highest unemployment rates in Canada.

Now what other difference could there be?

Do you suppose there are more guns in Windsor? All registered by law in Canada of course.

Re: Murder rates

I`ll just say this and you can look it up, Canuck.  Windsor has 21% visible minorities, where as Detroit has 89.4% visible minorities.  Too bad I can`t follow this thread the rest of the day, it could get interesting....Beans are a callin` Smiley Happy

Re: Murder rates

I see I forgot to include this link http://ca.news.yahoo.com/windsor-homicide-free-2-years-173752565.html

"I use it as an example," Minneapolis police Chief Timothy Dolan said earlier in September.

As of Sept. 1, Minneapolis had 22 homicides this year.

"The cities are so similar in so many ways, the policing is so similar — except for one factor, and that's that they have reasonable gun control up in Canada," Dolan said.

Windsor police credit those gun control laws and their focus on local guns, gangs and drugs for keeping the homicide rate low.

"It's a long stretch, but to attribute it to any one thing, I think, would be really dangerous," Windsor police Chief Gary Smith said. "There's a lot of things that stop the homicide rate, but the biggest factor is how we police it, because if we can keep the guns off the streets then that also reduces the risks."

In 2006, Windsor created a guns, gangs and drugs unit, specifically designed to handle the cross-border drug trade.

As of Sept. 1, Windsor police had seized 38 guns this year. They seized 42 in the previous two years combined.

The last killing in Windsor occurred Sept. 27, 2009. Mohamed Yousef, 23, was shot in the back after exiting a bar in the early morning hours.

By comparison, Halifax had 28 homicides in the last two years, up to Sept. 1, 2011. Regina has had 15 homicides during the same time period.

Detroit, which is just 1,200 metres from Windsor and has a population four times larger, has recorded 260 homicides to date in 2011.

Re: Murder rates

I think you'd need to find cities with more similar demographics. Normalize the numbers to account for the drug trade also. Otherwise you might as well be comparing with Mexico city.

You can belt this lot all day with a cricket bat and they would never change their minds about guns.  I sometimes think it is part of their personal apendage, like their ego.

Explain this to me Canuck

Welcome to Forest City Iowa http://www.usa.com/forest-city-ia-crime-and-crime-rate.htm

Everyone has at least a couple guns...couple dozen that is Smiley Happy  Now look at the murders and other crimes compared to the rest of Iowa and the United States. Notice the Low crime rate, why is that?   Look at the number of police officers needed to keep that low crime rate...Pretty impressive huh?

4150 people!!  You going to tout their crime rate? AND then say it is because everyone in town has a bunch of guns???  You really CAN'T be serious!  Are you???

Re: Explain this to me Canuck

So if you took everyone`s guns away in Forest City, would the murder rate go down? ... Trick question, the murder rate can`t get lower than zero.  If guns are soooo bad, you`d think there`d be one murder, wouldn`t you?...No robberies either, must be a damned nice place to live, doncha think?

Re: Explain this to me Canuck

My hometown in southern IL only has 4500 people and I know that not everyone in town owns a bunch of guns.  The last murder, and I can only remember 2 in my 68 years, was over 25 years ago.  I think we have maybe 5 police and one is the dispatcher, two police cars.  Everyone knows just about everyone else and very little crime at all.  So what?  That is what small towns are.  Just about everyone in Phoenix has a gun(s) and the murder rate is running at least one per day.  There is for sure at least one shooting each and every night.  At least, the early morning news reports on one just about every morning.

Re: Explain this to me Canuck

The murder rate in Forest City and El Dorado is none existent because citizens are armed, to rob someone would be a good way of getting you fruggin head blown off. In your Phonenix, I`m sure there are ritzy suburbs that are very safe.  See, that`s the baloney Canuck is trying to pull by comparing an upscale Winsor Ont to the down and dirty Detroit.  Dopers, rats and such congregate in the sleezy areas, of course their crime rate is high.  You could take away all their guns and there would still be a high crime rate.  You could get everyone in Forest City a Thompson machine gun and there still wouldn`t be any murders....You can argue with me but you`ll only look like a fool.  Excuse me, I gotta hot date with a pretty combine Smiley Tongue
