Re: to be contrary
So the person that owns the tools of production, ie the facilities, and provides the inputs, (hay, feed, etc) SHOULD get a return on their investment, and all the proceeds should NOT go to labor?
Interesting concept.

Re: to be contrary
If he paid her to lease the cows then he wasn't the rightful owner and she could take him to court to be compensated for the cattle, or if she paid him to lease his cows, then depending on the lease contract, he might have been able to end the lease when she left and since he owned the cattle, had the right to sell them. There would seem to be a WHOLE lot left out of the story to make a judgement. I am not doing any job for them but if I was doing it while they were absent, when they got home, they would take over the work.

Re: to be contrary
Like I told sammy, a whole lot of info not given as to the conditions of whatever contract they had. If I owned all of the buildings and equipment that my daughter used to run a business, then of course, she would pay rent or lease or some sort of compensation for the use of my equipment. PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY!! Isn't that what y'all preach all the time??

Re: Nice kids
It's funny that a thread about children that abuse parents or deny them the use of their own money was converted to a thread about parents that mistreat their children. There are no details about all the advantages bestowed by parents onto theior children. Only criticism of parents for over working and under compensating children.
Children have a habit of doing that. Of remembering being under compensated while forgetting the freebee benefits. Some on here even disparage those that worked for 50 to 60 year paying taxes and at the ripe old age of 65 start receiving gov't benefits. Even though they had every advantage given to them by the same parents that helped educate them and start them in business.
What sin have those elderly committed? Well they qualify for benefits that they were promised and they paid for according to the tax code. Now those same children think they are a burden on society and hogs in the government trough. Disrespect of the elderly seems to be an issue with some of these hogdog farmers that have taken hundreds of thousands out of the government trough. Sadly if those youngsters have to pay taxes it is just too much to expect. They think they deserve a tax free existance.

Re: Nice kids
Not really Don, I just pointed out that there are two sides to every story. I know individuals who have not treated their parents with the consideration they deserve.

Re: to be contrary
Would you call the police on your father? Especially when its a verbal family arrangement? In Don's original post did you ask him if the kids had signed a contract to care for the parents. Decency doesn't require a contract. If you've treated your children with respect and decency chances are good they will treat you the same. Exceptions of course, but I think its true for the most part.

Re: Nice kids
Two things. As Sam pointed out, there are most definitely two sides to every story and you think you know only one. Until you live in a house with someone over a period of time, you have no idea what goes on behind closed doors. Someone who is perceived as a fine, up-standing person by the general public could be a real POS at home to his wife and kids. I have had that situation on my own family. The child was always the last one picked up at school or not picked up at all. Events the parents were supposed to attend went unattended by them because they were too drunk to leave the couch. There was verbal abuse and just a general lack of family atmosphere in that house. And the parents were loved by their community. The child knew the truth and the payback was painful unless you knew the truth.
I pay my fair share of taxes but people like you complain if I'm asked to pay more and I don't gladly do it. If the government was spending my money wisely and responsibly I might not object so vehemently. Unfortunately that's not the case.

Re: Nice kids
Who pays for the salary of Don's social worker daughter, just out of idle curiousity.
