Yes Kraft that is often the problem, no thinking.

I know and have seen people who worked very hard, very long hours and did stupid things without 'thinking' that lost any thing they ever made by hard work.

When the third generation of Puritans began to become wealthy as a natural result of their hard work and thrift (and as a result of being among the first Europeans on a virgin continent, and beneficiaries of reasonable rule of law in the English tradition) it was a source of distress for the surviving elders.

Of course once they became prosperous they were inclined to various forms of frivolity.

As an old coot with little strength and energy left, I wonder how we ever got all that work done. I was well acquainted with a scoop shovel and a silage fork. Lots of work in the 60's and 70's without benefit of skid steer loaders. A lot of hogs farrow to finish and done the hard way, Feeding cattle and filling the silo and emptying out with a silage fork. Tossing it down the chute and lfilling baskets and string it along the feed bunks.

Also winter weather with the power going out and hauling water from town with milk cans to water sows and pigs in the farrowing house. Chopping ice from around hog waterers and sometimes scooping the snow away from fence lines so the hogs wouldn't walk over the fences.

We didn't have any weight problems in those days that was for sure. Fortunately it got better, but the real answer to prosperity in not the hard work but in the good luck of doing the right thing at the right time. Buying land and then sacrificing to make the payments. Discipline to make the mortgage payments instead of buying cars pickups and machinery.

Good decisions among some bad ones but luck had a good deal to do with it. However, if you do want to win the lottery, you do have to buy a ticket. And when the bottom is falling out of the land market, you have to have the cojones to sign the purchase contract. You don't know after land has depreciated 2/3rds whether it is done deflating or not.
