Obama closes another US factory

Sends the jobs overseas.

snip-

Because of heightened EPA regulations, Doe Run Company's Herculaneum lead smelter in Herculaneum, Missouri—the last U.S. smelter of its kind—is closing its doors on December 31, 2013.

Once this happens, the lead for traditional ammunition will have to be imported, thus driving up the price for bullets, shotgun shells, etc.

The Herculaneum smelter has been operating in the same location since 1892. And according to the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA), "it is the only smelter in the United States which can produce lead bullion from raw lead ore," so once it closes, the only lead smelters left in the nation will be ones that recycle lead from existing items "such as lead acid batteries or spent ammunition components."

Herculaneum's product is the type of lead used to make components for traditional lead ammunition, and once the smelter closes, such lead and/or ammunition components will have to be imported into the U.S. Ammunition prices are expected to rise, reflecting import costs.

In 2008, the EPA "issued new National Ambient Air Quality Standards for lead that were 10 times tighter than the previous standard." Following the release of this standard, the Doe Run Company tried to bring the Herculaneum smelter into compliance but in 2010 realized the cost of compliance was too great. They then reached a "comprehensive settlement" with both the EPA and the state of Missouri, requiring the smelter to close at the end of 2013.

Killing more of those precious living wage jobs, to create a welfare class dependent on the government all the while raising prices on sportsmen.  0bama is killing 2 birds with 1 stone in the liberal handbook.

Guys, if you had to come up with inside trojan horse enemies, intent on keeping the USA unprepared to fight a war, you would be hard pressed to find more likely candidates than the current clowns in charge.

Even Australia is more adept at protecting its business, a move by ADM to acquire a major Aussie grain business was just nixxed by the Aussie govt.

The vast welfare class in America should be making domestic steel, building and improving roads, and anything else of value rather than smoking crack cocaine and talking on Obama phones.

THe Lucy's should not be able to vote themselves government benefits. I have a hard time believeing that the Washingtons and Jeffersons were more incensed,200 years ago, than the fairly silent 53% majority in America are right now at what is going on. We probably just are one spark away from a new movement or revolution that will make Mitt Romney look like a middle of the road compromising wimp.

Re: Obama closes another US factory

Wondering if that will be like the opening skirmishes of the War Between the States, whenin the swells drove out to the hills over looking the battlefields in their carraiges to watch from a distance?

Make sure you get a press release out so that the addled masses can see what you are doing.  Best to include a bit of info as to just why and some editorial content explaining to them just how it will beneifit them each, personally. How  ypu ad your compatriots in the  drag effect entitled upper middle classes are going to wage war, funded by the cronyism heeled upper classes for he future of the huddled proletariat.

It's going to take more organizationand commitment  than just you and 3020 and jput being pissed because you are concerned that  your taxes might go up.

And BTW, after nearly 3/4 of a Century of bipartisan supported, universally accepted sound science backed efforts to reduce if not eliminate concentrations of lead from various elements in our environment for the purpose of keeping the stuff out of our organs and bloodstreams it's going to be tough to get widespread support for suddenly stopping that effort over ideaology.

Bruce, I sincerely hope that your vices have not rendered you so unhealthy that you don't get to live to see where your progressive politics take America. I sense that you are much more unsetltled than the total idiots like a bart or a goat. You don't seem to be as oblivious as most of the current crop of liberal fools.

Where are we now, 45 years into the trajectory of LBJ's welfare state, I mean Great Society? How is all of that working out? You do realize what a 20 trillion dollar national debt is, right? What happens when all that America produces is paper money? Or do you go to sleep at night peacefully snoring thinking that nationalizing farmland is going to be enough to let you pass into the great afterlife and to hell with those that come later? Think that the Chinese are going to just walk away and tell America that we don't have to pay the debt back?

Re: Obama closes another US factory

Shouldn't you tell the whole story?

On Feb. 26, 2002, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) released a Health Consultation that contained the results of their blood-lead census and other sampling conducted in August and October, 2001. Overall the rate of elevated blood-lead (over 10 micrograms per deciliter) in children 6 years of age and under in Herculaneum was 28 percent. The rate of elevated blood-lead in children residing east of Highway 61-67 was 45 percent, which is the highest recorded in the state.

The DHSS Health Consultation determined a circle of contamination existed around the smelter. The elevated blood levels in children under 72 months of age were

That's strange. 3020 was ranting about windmills the other day and didn't want acknowledge about pollution. Apparently this lead joint is spewing out similar emissions and they still want to blame Obama. Strange indeed.

More to this story.

Obama had nothing to do with this. Note that the new standards were imposed on 2008, under Bush the Lesser. And the EPA worked decades with this company to get compliance.

Lead is nasty stuff. Citizens said it is not OK to poison their city.

And this closing has little to do with ammo supply. Check this: http://onlygunsandmoney.blogspot.com/2013/11/sierra-bullets-on-shutdown-of.html

and this: http://sierrabullets.wordpress.com/2013/11/01/sierra-responds-how-will-the-closure-of-the-lead-smelt...

“Posting on SnipersHide.com, one industry insider says shooters should not be overly concerned about the Doe Run shut-down, because smelting is still being done in nearby Mexico:

“The lead industry has been transitioning out of the United States for over a decade now. 85% of the lead smelting industry capacity migrated over the Mexican border where there are [fewer environmental regulations]. The remainder of production capacity will be online and running by the third quarter of 2014. There has been no production disruption to speak of in obtaining lead or lead products. The auto battery industry among others has prepared for this eventuality for some time….

The last lead smelter closing in December did not have enough capacity to supply even 10% of the battery industry much less the ammunition industry. The lead being used in ammunition today hasn’t been coming from the United States for years already. The closing of that plant will not have any appreciable effect on lead availability at all. There is a great deal of lead processed here being extruded, made into shot, converted to wire, etc., but the smelting operation is only one part of the production process.”

No need to panic gun-owners.

You are correct. I should have said Almighty Big Government closes another US factory.
