I agree in that I don't like it and try to avoid but most are around large cities to give some"breathing" as some who are in a hurry will pay for the privilege. Some roads and bridges are built without federal money and they need a way to pay for them. Ideally that debt is retired after paid off but some not. They built a large bridge over the Ohio River in Shawneetown, IL back in late50s or early 60s and put a toll on it to pay for it. I remember it was $0.50 for a car. There is no toll on that bridge now and hasn't been for many years.
