Re: Re:Racism is taught
Exactly Don. And that is what I am saying about getting out in the world and getting to know others. When you mix with different people from different cultures and different skin pigment you find out they are the same as you. They hurt just as much as you when 'words' are exchanged whether deliberately or 'accidentally'.
And so much is learned in the home, in the community and in the church, many times things that are not true and hurt others.

Re: Prejudice & Racism
Canuck, I thought your post would have been swamped with replies from the likes of Mollie and Craig. Perish the thought if I have formed an incorrect opinion about their racial views. Their silence is deafening now the guilt has taken over. I know many will disagree with me and not even reply but most of these type of forums are full of hatred whether it be racial or political. Hatred too, not just a little difference of opinion. Recently, Mollie has been right out of his tree in his condemnation of Obama and made countless references to his race, and all of them derogatory. Some months ago Craig jumped off his high horse and castigated Mollie for introducing race to the debate but since then he has been silent because not only does Mollie's prejudice echo his thoughts but the stupid fool is doing Craig's dirty work. They are clones.

Re: Prejudice & Racism, BA
Hey Canuck, to put aside my religious beliefs and put on a evolutionists hat, my theory would be: If a race/tribe lived in a tropical climate, alot of the issues involved with food and weather survival is off the table. The only concern would be diseases. A northern tribe/race had harsh climate, food and cold would be a huge issue and only the most innovative would survive. Not having a easy source of fruits, they were forced to hunt and start farming. All of which gave them a higher protein diet, increasing brain devolopment. Harsh climate forced the weak and dull to perish. Where as the tropics encouraged anyone who could avoid disease to live and reproduce....Ma Ma Nature`s selective breeding, if you will. I would add skin color is not the only differences in the races. Skull shape/size, brain mass, skeletal structure allow scientists to determine the race of any individual of any age. Thank you for allowing me to use you as a sounding board on this controversal topic.

Re: Prejudice & Racism, BA
I'm thinking that you would apprecate the best seller Guns Germs and Steel. It's essentially all about what you are saying here.
And FWIW, and not related to the book but to your post, racism and classism and the attendent persecution and horrors that come with them spring up when the lucky latitude and resource dwellers get too obsessed with the notion that they actually had somethihg to do with it, or worse, that some mysterious unknown and unseen figure or element predetermined their good fortune.

Re: Re:Racism is taught
That is the good thing about young children Don. They have not yet had their heads filled with stupid crap from people, corporate America and the media telling them they are different from others or that they are superior to others if they do as they are told. I worry for a lot of young girls who are brought up to believe they must be a size 4 and wear all kinds of make up, clothes and other accesseries or they will not be considered pretty, successful and will have no friends. I always told my children that people like you for what kind of person you are and not what kind of clothes you wear or car you drive. I have seen a lot of fashionable dummies and jerks in my time.

Re: Re:Racism is taught
I observe the classes and teams that my grandsons are part of in NE Minneapolis and see all of the pictures of each of them with "my friends" and try then to imagine how we oldsters have come such a short distance over such a long time.
Best story was when the 3 year lod was showing a picture ot his gr. Aunt, my sister, of a pre-school activity and said something about the one African-American child in the picture being "different" than the rest of them...upon which my sis took a deep breath and decided to dig further into that..and asked "Why?" and the littler feller said "Well, she's the tallest, and she's a girl!" My sister looked and sure neough she was the only girl in a picture of half a dozen or so kids...and was quite easily the tallest.
She came into we where I was with a big smile on here face and told us that maybe there is hope in the world.
I wonder if someone had been there with a cell-ph camera if then the incident would have picked up any hits on you-tube and then if Andrew Breitbardt could have snipped out the "She's different.." second or two, and turned it into an indictment of some sort or other?

But you are forgetting one very important part of the entire video piece..... When she was talking about not helping that white farmer as much as she should,..... The NAA(L)CP crowd, that she was addressing, were chuckling and muttering, "yeah, right on...", and otherwise approving the idea that the white farmer SHOULD not get any help from a black person, even though it was her job to do so.
It is the reaction of the racist blacks in that group is the story......they thought it was perfectly fine for someone to discriminate against someone not of their race.....no different than Sen. Robert Byrd in his earlier days. Same with the New Black Panthers wanting to kill white babies and deny whites any rights.

Re: Re:Racism and cheering
Here is laughter about 'knocking off' (that means killing) Obama.
And it is on a 'News' network.

Re: Re:Racism is taught
Racism is learned. As a young girl in jr high, I was falsly accused of using the N word, with in seconds in the hallway at school I was surrounded by a sea of black faces telling me i would be killed, I remember looking around for a teacher (they stood in the halls in front of their rooms between classes. I had never had any problems or as far as I know even been noticed by the blacks. I was not asked by them if i said that, i was told i said that and that my life was done because of it. The teachers (who also feared them) did nothing while I stood alone being physically threatened ,they only stared. Finally my best friend rescued me. When it all was over the teachers came up, and out of hearing of the black girls, asked if i was ok of course I told them to F*** off. First time ever in my life I had used that term.
When you enter stores in Waterloo the blacks walk 3 to 4 abreast ,if you do not move out of their way they will knock you down. If you look them in the eyes they will stop and get in your face and ask you what your problem is. My husband and I have had carts pushed in our way and left where they are so we had to go around it. We do not look like skin heads or wear racist t shirts we do not look for or provoke trouble. We are very normal down to earth people. If fact we now drive further to avoid having to shop there. I worked with girls who dated blacks. They were beaten and cheated by a "man" whom never held a job and whom they supported and had many children by many mothers. They would come to work with black eyes, bruises and even stiches from beatings.
I would love to see any of you walk down East 4th street and go up and lay a big ole hug on some of the black folks there. I'd bet with in 10 minutes you'd have a bullet in you.
A whole lifetime of experience has lead me to my predjudices. I'm thrilled your expereicnes have been different but I will not live my life by your standards, when my standards might just be what saves my life.

Re: Prejudice & Racism, BA
Tropics or not food is not always available but you are correct when you point out the link to good nutrition (note I said GOOD nutrition and that is different from lots of 'food') and intelligence. That is proven.
I think a lot of 'learning' by humans has happened it areas of the world that are not northern latitudes. There is the good nutrition and good health issue partnered with a peaceful society that allows and encourages learning and experimenting.
If you think Europeans got us to where we are today all by themselves then you do not understand the history of human development.
