Rachel Maddow

has a video being broadcast about our country and the big things we used to do. The Hoover dam, the TVA, the eisenhower ionterstate highway system. Are we capable of big things anymore? Do we even want to?

We can barely keep up with maintenence of our infrastructure without building more.

Well america ever be great again?  Will the world trade center be rebuilt in less than two decades after 9/11/01?

We aren't doers anymore or we don't have vision anymore. That new power grid that needs to be built? Will that get done.

Perhaps this is a depression as there is so much negativism around that perhaps americas golden days are over. Reagan tried to starve the beast and created an energy deficient nation.

Re: Rachel Maddow

So long as the country is more interested in "helping" the poor and minorities, so long as the country is more concerned about one person's "feelings"  and so long as there is a liberal in the congress, the whitehouse, the supreme court and the press we are not going to be able to do what we should.

They are more interested in looks than function, they'd rather give a kid padding and a helmet than beat his bottom and tell him to keep off the street.

You misspelled Rachel's last name, it's Madcow.

Re: Rachel Maddow

Mr. Kraft, how long did it take, and how much did it cost, to do the environmental impact study before the inter-state system was built? Same for the World Trade center.

Re: Rachel Maddow

Those big projects? They lifted poor and minorities, right along with you and me, or at least our previous generations. Interstates, dams, rural electrification, ports....etc. etc.

They were seen as useful and necessary projects, by liberals and conservatives alike...both of which actually meant something that could fairly well be defined at the time. Now they are gross abstractions, too often co-opted by those who want to be seen as one or the other,  used loosely by those who want to demonize another.

The Supreme Court is proving by the day that it is in the conservative, or right wing or whatever you want to call it camp. Do you follow the actual news, or just what's in Townhall and Worldnetdaily?

"..we are not going to be able to do what we should"

??????

And just what is that? Besides keep your taxes low and keeping those duly noted as inferior in their place?

Re: Rachel Maddow

Over 40 years ago, the last stretch of I-90, linking the 2 coasts was held up for a few years by a heroic farmer who was damned if they were just going to run it through a spectacularly valuable wetland and wildlife area in South Central Minnesota. Made big national news and inspired conservationists everywhere. It eventually went through, with extensive and relatively effective mitigation.

Nobody died. Very likely hundreds of billions of dollars worth of produce and commerce have passed across that stretch since. Stuff that folks made money on some of the ime. Probably even paid taxes on...gladly.

You know, you might actually be more comfortable in Russia. Not the old U.S.S.R.  We all know how you'd feel about that. But there might be a niche for you in what they've got now. You could pay ransom to the oligarchs and not have to worry about the lousy (d)emocratic government. It'd probably cost you more (as will all of the privatization of everything that you think would be the berries here) out of pocket, but maybe you'd feel better about it. You'd know exactly where it was going and wouldn't have to fret over some unseen, lesser soul benefiting from any of it.

Re: Rachel Maddow

Anyone ever see the show on the building of the Boulder / Hoover Dam?  I believe I saw it on History Channel a few years back.  I remember them saying the dam was finished well ahead of time and came in under budget.   Something you seldom see now days with projects of that magnitude.  One other interesting note was how they pumped coolant through tubes in the cement to get the cement to cool down to avoid damaging the cement from over heating while it cured.   They still used the original generators at the Hoover Dam.   Great tour if one is ever in the area.

One has to wonder if OSHA, unions and environmental concerns have not resulted in slowing down the building process on such large projects now days.

Re: Rachel Maddow

I heard neil Borsch or Bullsh how ever you spel;l it on the radio this morning. He was cussing the h out of the stimulas program this morning. He stated that it did absolutely no good.

He didn't mention the tax cuts or checks that were cut for taxpayers was included in that vast sum.

No Good? Well this observer notice how much road construction was done in this state. I think Oklahoma may have be the highest beneficiary of stimulous money. The road construction in tulsa and other parts of the state was dynamic which made moving about town a bit difficult.  Yet there were alot of streets improved,  Renewal of stretches of I 244, new turning lanes and 169 north had a large project.

Coffeville Kansas had multi millions spent on a new interchage there. I doubt if it is done yet as it lookrf like animmense project. There is no doubt that big things were done with the stimulous money but it may not have created a bunch of new jobs but it surely created alot of work for road crews. Work that needed to be done.

I wonder what government could have done to actually create jobs in great numbers. And if there was apositive idea would anyone in the republican side of congress supported it? I think not. They have been harping about the worthless stimulous while bellying up to the trough  to get federal money for their states. Money that couldn't possible do any

good.

It's a wonder pur interstate systm. I the current republican congress were to build the interstates today they would be two lane gravel roads. We simply couldn't have a tax increase to fund it.

Re: Rachel Maddow

I've seen it a couple of times. Heck of a documentary. As for the cooling, I beleive that the show mentioned that the concrete is still cooling to this day and will for considerable decades longer.

The holdup on good projects is part of the myth and legend that is winger speak. If they are held up it is for a reason. If they are BAD projects, and are held up it's because they are BAD projects. It's been that way through the last quarter of  a century of more. From Nixon on through Obama. Actually easing up under Obama who is rapidly proving to be the best Republican President we've had since Coolidge. All of these people here and elsewhere who are calling him a socialist and anti-business obviously don't read the paper or watch the news. (Unless, of course, it's something else about him.......and they feel compelled to make ^^^^ up.)

The really hard to believe  part of this all is that all of thse these little people of teh same essential status as you and me, these people who are protected by projects not being shabby (see China until it simply became unbearable and they decided it would be easier to regulate and inspect than having to execute architects and  engineers and contrators all the time) are again carrying  water for that SOB  in W. Va who keeps dropping coal mine ceilings on people,. and the Kochs who want virtually no emmission standards.

God only knows what the history of this era is going to read like.

Don said ..KUDOS to don...said it best in the other post about this gang of GOP'ers building an interstate system ot of 2 lane gravel roads.

America has been taxed and regulated so much that all of the greatness is all gone.

The energy and zest for "sticking one's neck out" has faded away.... much in the same way that the Soviet system drained the Russian people from giving a crap, any more.
