The Sekulow et al arguments were pretty over the top. That works when you have fake TV lawyers arguing to a fake jury for The Base through the TV cameras. Probably not so much with SCOTUS, which likes to be kinda legal-ish.
Sorta like some of Roberts' earlier opinions- "come on guys, I'm trying, but you have to work with me here."
