They get a call from the dealer giving them your SS number or some other identifier and they (state police) check to see if you have a felony record and/or if you have any outstanding warrants.  That plus the 4 or 5 question they ask on the form you fill out for the dealer is ALL they have on you.  They could ask if anyone living with you has ever been treated for a mental illness.  That in itself might have saved the kindergarten kids in CN because the mother would either not been able to buy a gun or would have had to prove she had a locked gun safe that her son could not get into.  Of course, I know that doesn't stop the rambo rightie who flips out over the sure thing of losing his guns that isn't going to happen.

i AGREE! Now just show us how to sort the gun crazies out from you honest gun owners that will never hurt anybody? That is what you are asking us to do is sort those bad guys out before they do anyone harm. And yet you probably won't approve of any investigative tactic to do so.

Those that do the massacres at sandy hook, at the theatres, in the shopping mall were fine upstanding citizens until they weren't, And that is when they go to a public event and start blasting away at the innocents. So you expect us to sort those people out that may do violence agains tthe rest of us when we really have no way to do that. And with what little hope we have in doing that, even that recieves ample resistance fro the gun lobby.

There is no sure fire way of preventing such violence without severe restance to gun ownership or at least limits on some types of guns. Until you can provide a method of restricting who gets what guns, then  we will have to control what fire power you have available.

It's not unlike arms control legislation internationally. Do we really want all nations large and small owning the most dangerous arms on the planet? That is what you are arguing for when you insist on unfettered fire arm ownership within this country.

I'm really not at all surprised that NONE of you rightwingers could give me ONE single thing that would harm honest law abiding citizens with more detailed background checks.

Depends on what you mean by a "more detailed" background check.

Am neither Demo nor Repub, not an NRA member, but I do own guns (a small caliber rifle, couple of semi-auto shotguns).

First off, guns don't kill people any more than do cars -- people kill people, sometimes accidentally, often not.

Second, in the United States, we are innocent until proven guilty, at least outside of the media influence.

Third, we already have laws requiring some kind of background checks in some cases, don't we(?), let's use them.

Fourth, people can lie on those extra questions for which there is no publicly documented history.

Fifth, those who want guns will still be able to get them, whether for acceptable uses or otherwise.

So .  .  .  what purpose would a "more detailed" background check serve, other than to increase the red tape for law-abiding citizens, and increase the cost of government oversight?

Do you remember the check when you bought your last gun?  I do.  In fact I remember the last 3-4.  I filled out a questionaire that asked me if I had ever been convicted of a crime, had ever been treated for a mental illness, was I a citizen and a couple more.  I had to put my address, phone number and SS number.  Then the dealer called the state police on a special line for gun purchases and gave them my name and my SS number.  That person looked up my name and number on a computer to see if I had been convicted of a felony and did I have any warrants out on me.  Whole process too about 90 seconds including the time to punch in the phone number.  If they came  back negative on the arrest record and warrant info, I bought the gun.  I think there could be a few more questions mainly about where I live and with whom I live and about their arrest and mental health record.  The if anything was positive, then I would not be allowed to purchase until I proved to the law enforcement folks that I had a secure place to keep my new gun away from the person in question.  At the most, it cost a law abiding citizen a few hours to a few days and maybe a little money to make sure that person could not get my gun without me knowing it.
