Re: Howard Zinn...Wiki
To be valid, the progressive history should not try to whitewash where
their socialistic, atheistic, communistic, fascist policies take society.
Maybe conventional histories don't show how the EIC, section 8 housing,
food stamps, and all the other good intentioned welfare programs
have sapped the desire of a significant segment of native born
Americans, and recent imports, to work and build estates. If you
are fed, clothed, sheltered by the progressive state, ie other peoples
money, and still have enough left over for crack , powder, and alcohol,
and don't have any community mores to stop you from having a plethora
of baby mamas and baby papas you are not very likely to be working
two jobs, and saving pennies.
Plus, and this is the big one, the histories would have to be written from
the future to show where the country really ends up....like Venezula and
Cuba. Thankfully, a lot of people in America currently do "get it" and we
may see the backlash this fall.

As per the example of the coal miners who are now the pet hostages of the right.
Their forebearers literally fought wars in order for them to have anything. And the mine owners' estates did just fine anyway, for the most part. The Rockefeller descendants appear to be doing OK.

When checking out histories check out Norway and a few other countries with good social programs that would be labelled 'communistic' or 'socialistic' by you and the majority of the population is atheist.

Re: Howard Zinn...Wiki
Seriously doubtful that it sees any use as a textbook. Maybe the random instructor here and there. But makes for a nice obscure issue spectacular.
Literature such as it would be gets disseminated by personal reference.
And in case you missed it being mentioned here or simply discounted it as you are wont to do, Zinn's service record and the encounters he participated in are monumental. As is often the case, the wingershere gets way more up tight when someone whom they presume should be by nature "one of ours" based on their technical resume goes "off the reservation" than over some goofball that they feel is simply and obviously misguided. Coming to mind would be John Kerry, Jim Webb, George McGovern and to a degree, our shared Congressman. And Tammy Duckworth. JFK, a war hero, who was looked upon by the right wing establishment as a heretic for running as a Democrat and having the balls to as much as look crossways at the extremist Cold War Machine.
It's a good book.

Re: Howard Zinn...Wiki
Red, was this in your homeschool curriculum?
It is technically and narrowly true but the patronizing "milk and cookies" bit is the tipper that it is propaganda, and certainly doesn't belong in a textbook. Unless you want your children to be lied to.
Gotta give them some credit though- nothing like pre-tainting future jury pools.
"The charge that sways juries and offends public sensitivities … is that greedy corporations sacrifice human lives to increase their profits. Is this charge true? Of course it is. But this isn’t a criticism of corporations; rather it is a reflection of the proper functioning of a market economy. Corporations routinely sacrifice the lives of some of their customers to increase profits, and we are all better off because they do. That’s right, we are lucky to live in an economy that allows corporations to increase profits by intentionally selling products less safe than could be produced. The desirability of sacrificing lives for profits may not be as comforting as milk, cookies and a bedtime story, but it follows directly from a reality we cannot wish away."

Re: Howard Zinn...Wiki
Reminds me of being in Cancun, Mexico, and watching a building going up. Struck
up a conversation with a native, and he told me about construction in Mexico vs. the
USA. In Mexico, he said, it would be common for several workers to loser their lives
during the construction of a building, with only a token amount paid to their families
for funeral costs. Live was cheap there, at least adult life.

Re: Howard Zinn...Wiki
So waving the bloody shirt is your retort to Zinn's communist views?
If that is the criteria to be taken seriously, Adolf Hitler was obviously
fit the bill with his WW I service, along with most of the Soviet
communists.
I prefer the antiwar views of Buchanan, and hopefully Trump will
be a sort of Isolationist, too. We cannot affort do be the policeman for
the world.
