It is hard to compare the data but I think the actual mortality rate for hospitalizations is down probably closer to 2/3rds than 1/2 from the first surge. It is the product of incremental progress in managing the acute form of the disease, no magic bullets. That's a good thing, but unlikely to hold if ICUs overflow.
