Re: The Ugly Face of Socialism
So your premise is, in spite of any evidence to the contrary, Socialism works if outside powers would just let it alone, and that the system is not inherently flawed?
You can understand perhaps while I am pretty dismissive of your thought process?
then again, probably not.
Oh to live on Sugar Mountain.

Re: The Ugly Face of Socialism
Socialism failing isn't the story in Venezuela. Democracy being undermined by externalities is.
Turkey. Haiti. Hungary. Indonesia. Hell, Kansas.

Re: The Ugly Face of Socialism
Maybe you can show a few facts to support that premise? You can type a sentence, and that put FACT in bold letters after that sentence, but it doesn't make it true.
The stories I read about natural resource rich Venezuela are ones that show systemic failure of an economic model...where a central planning force decries what people should make, what something should sell for, etc etc.
Show me why that is not the cause and why the failure of Democracy is the driving force. Outside of saying that democratic people should be angels and the ones that are not are devils.....if that is your premise, you are supporting what Reagan quipped....that the only places where Socialism works are Heaven and Hell.

Re: The Ugly Face of Socialism
The Democratically elected government chose a "system"' with the implied blessing of the electorate. With a petro-economy, that didn't fit with the rest of the petro complex....corps, nations, oligarchs, financiers, gangsters etc. (not sure about gas stations....that CITGO stand up there not far NW of you got 2/3 or more of our car gas business for years when we got by there, which was often 5-10 times a month. It never seemed watered down and was more often or not the best value between Windom and the Twin Cities).
GM and the oil concerns in business there wanted more favorable terms for labor and wholesale resource extraction. The government wasn't forthcoming, being aware as all Bolivarians would be, of how that works out for 2nd world nations and economies and peoples usually does. All that remained was punitive action.
Essentially, with there being no better way of saying it, they had to be "broke of sucking eggs", as you would a bad dog.
i'm sure that you have "read up on it". There have been volumes written on the matter. From every corner.

Re: The Ugly Face of Socialism
There is one constant among socialist, all the failures of socialism are never attributable to socialism. It wasn't real socialism is the standard refrain. Still plenty of defenders of Stalin and Mao. And still plenty of socialist who claim socialism is not authoritarian.

And it's a failure. It keeps the inefficient in business.
