The leaders said the same to the people of Venezuela. Socialism fails. Always. When the people become socialized there is no one who wants to stock the shelves. They just form a line where they are told to get their free stuff. There is a huge difference between fear and caution. When some one tells you they will give you something for free there is reason for caution. If they can give it to you they can also take it back again. Something the people of Valenzuela have come to discover.

I don't get your complaint, any and every American can get into the farming game, join the lines at FSA & MPCI and receive those freebies. Don't complain, join the game.

I did the game for quite a few years, but I didn't  game the govt  to prop me up as we see today.  nothing was handed to me to start either, that gives me prides, went out on two legs not three.

don't the seed  companys provided replacement seed for early planting mistakes.  never had that problem, always tried for may first. 

couple of young pailcalfs have corn in here, its under 4/5 inchs this morning. daddy left plenty of money to keep going till its gone.

include the period approximately 1940-1980 when war necessitated that moderate democratic socialism be engaged to create a broad American middle class*.

*mostly white, another historical contributor to current perspectives.

Also why it began to wind down once the Soviet threat evaporated.

That prosperity couldn't have anything to do with having the world's only remaining industrial capacity.  That momentum carried a long way.

Of course. But people at the top also acquiesced to the larger effort. The Cold War was the central organizing principle of our society.

But when the age of neoliberalism commenced during the Reagan years it became increasingly about global competitiveness. The gamble was essentially that business could live with a deterioration of domestic consumer demand* in exchange for access to global markets.

*domestic demand remained relatively robust through the use of stock and housing bubbles for a while until the turnip got totally squeezed out.
