Re: The Widening Gyre......

Lost in the very serious Egyptian and surrounding area situation and the general disinterest on the part of the media in matters of finance and the economy other than to post statistics relating to markets and employment has been the big international economic summit in Davos, Switzerland.

Nobody has been any better at seeing through the fog on these issues since 2008 than Simon Johnson, and he gets to the guts of things, and doesn't seem to  be particularly optomistic:

What happens here in relation to the unrest elsewhere fully depends on how long the plutocrats can keep a big enough % of the rest of us thinking that there will coontinue to be "something in it" for us.  Simon Johnson filets that out, calmly but spectacularly.

SNIP:

"But I venture the challenging statement that if American democracy ceases to move forward as a living force, seeking day and night by peaceful means to better the lot of our citizens, then Fascism and Communism, aided, unconsciously perhaps, by old-line Tory Republicanism, will grow in strength in our land." -Franklin D. Roosevelt, November 4, 1938

I'd read this piece when it came out back in 2005 and it's been ringing in my ears these past few days, but it took a while to go through the old stack of magazines and search on line to find it. Finally put the right search words in.

What pisses off some people the most about bankers looting the country is that they were hoping the government would do it.
